{"id":58924,"date":"2019-06-24T09:12:27","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T08:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=58924"},"modified":"2019-06-24T09:12:27","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T08:12:27","slug":"alexander-stadium-redevelopment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/alexander-stadium-redevelopment\/58924\/","title":{"rendered":"Designs unveiled for redevelopment of Alexander Stadium"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Plans have been published which unveil the design for the redevelopment of Alexander Stadium, as a public consultation begins<\/h2>\n<p>The Alexander Stadium at Walsall Road, Perry Barr, will be the focal point of the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/lendlease-awarded-commonwealth-village\/49510\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonwealth Games<\/a>, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as the athletics programme.<\/p>\n<p>New artist impressions of the Alexander Stadium have been released revealing Birmingham City Council\u2019s intentions to create a legacy asset the city and its residents can be truly proud of.<\/p>\n<p>The redeveloped stadium will increase its permanent seating capacity from 12,700 to 18,000 allowing up to 40,000 during the Games through additional temporary seating.<\/p>\n<h3>Key features of the Alexander Stadium include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A new western stand replacing the Main, Knowles and Nelson stands<\/li>\n<li>New tiered seating to the north and south<\/li>\n<li>A new 400m 6-lane warm-up track and re-laying of a new IAAF Category 1 track (400m 9-lane competition standard track)<\/li>\n<li>Improved public realm and parking provision, with additional landscaping and signage<\/li>\n<li>Installation of new stadium lighting and practice throwing field<\/li>\n<li>A new access road from A453 Aldridge Road (to be used for event\/maintenance use only).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The design will facilitate the temporary \u2018Games overlay\u2019 elements and additional infrastructure needed to deliver the 2022 Games. Further detail regarding the Games overlay will be consulted on at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Demolition of the current west stand within the stadium is subject to a separate application which will be submitted to Birmingham City Council in summer 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Ian Ward, leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham City Council<\/a>, said: \u201cWe\u2019re now in an exciting phase of the design process where we would like to share our plans for the future with the community and hear their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team has designed a redeveloped stadium which will meet the needs and aspirations of the community for generations to come.
