{"id":59281,"date":"2019-07-02T07:47:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T06:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=59281"},"modified":"2019-07-02T07:47:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-02T06:47:57","slug":"helipad-manchester-hospitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/helipad-manchester-hospitals\/59281\/","title":{"rendered":"Work begins on \u00a33.9m helipad for Manchester hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Construction work on the new \u00a33.9m helipad at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) has begun and is set to benefit four major hospitals in Manchester<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new helicopter landing site, being built on the roof of Grafton Street car park on Oxford Road will enable critically ill or injured babies, children and adults to be airlifted straight to four major MFT hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A high-level patient transfer corridor will connect the helipad landing site to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/mri\/\">Manchester Royal Infirmary<\/a> (MRI), <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/rmch\/\">Royal Manchester Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> (RMCH), <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/saint-marys\/\">Saint Mary\u2019s Hospital<\/a> (SMH) and <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/royal-eye\/\">Manchester Royal Eye Hospital<\/a> (MREH).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each of the hospitals on <a href=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/medical-education\/student-practice-placement\/oxford-road-campus\/\">MFT\u2019s Oxford Road Campus<\/a> offer world-leading, specialist services which are not always available at other hospitals within the North West and in some cases, the rest of the UK. The construction of the helipad is expected to see an estimated 312 patients airlifted to the site each year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Funding for the helipad was raised by MFT Charity\u2019s Time Save Lives appeal, which raised a phenomenal \u00a33.9m in just 12 months, thanks to the dedication and generosity of its supporters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The appeal was the focus of the Charity\u2019s fundraising, with individuals, businesses and community groups from across the North West all showing their support. This included a generous donation of \u00a31.3m from the <a href=\"https:\/\/helpappeal.org.uk\/\">HELP Appeal<\/a> and \u00a31.1m from the government\u2019s LIBOR fines funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Building work officially began earlier in June 2019 and the helipad is set to be fully operational by spring 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust chairman, Kathy Cowell, said: \u201cI am delighted that the construction work has begun and that we will be able to offer this service in spring 2020. It is a very exciting time for MFT and the helipad is an amazing project which will help to save so many lives in Greater Manchester, the North West and beyond.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr Jon Simpson, medical director and consultant physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary, added: \u201cThe quality and speed of specialist medical care following a major trauma injury is vital to ensuring our patients have the best chance of a full recovery. In these situations, patients need to be transferred to a Major Trauma Centre or an Emergency Department, both of which we have on site at the MRI and RMCH.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Robert Bertram, chief executive of the HELP Appeal added: \u201cThis is one of the biggest donations that the HELP Appeal has given to any hospital. But, we didn\u2019t hesitate in coming to their aid, because as the Major Trauma Centre for the northwest a life-saving helipad is essential.
