{"id":59696,"date":"2019-07-09T11:47:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T10:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=59696"},"modified":"2019-07-09T11:47:32","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T10:47:32","slug":"building-mental-health-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/building-mental-health-construction\/59696\/","title":{"rendered":"A five step framework to building mental health in construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, founder of \u2018Building Mental Health\u2019, an online portal set up by active industry volunteers discusses the five-step framework to help the construction sector develop a positive mental health culture<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthouseclub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity<\/a> is the only charity that provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families.\u00a0Building Mental Health provides a 24\/7 Construction Industry Helpline which is the first point of contact to access a range of completely free and confidential support services including;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergency Financial aid to construction families in crisis<\/li>\n<li>Advice on welfare and mental wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>Support on legal, tax and debt management matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last year the charity\u2019s helpline received 1,662 calls and provided \u00a31.25m of support to construction families in crisis. This year they are seeing a huge increase in demand for their charitable services and rely heavily on the generosity of those within the industry to \u2018help their own\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>The five-step framework<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h4>Commit to making a difference<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Change in the workplace starts with your management. Sign the Building Mental Health Charter and make a commitment to improving mental health in our industry.<\/p>\n<p>Sign the charter: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buildingmentalhealth.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.buildingmentalhealth.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3>Introduce a helpline<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already got an Employee Assistance Programme, order your Construction Industry Helpline Pack, which lets your staff know where they can turn to with promotional posters and wallet-sized cards.<\/p>\n<p>Order a helpline pack: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contrusctionindustryhelpline.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.contrusctionindustryhelpline.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can download the Construction Industry Helpline App which is a preventative tool providing support and guidance on a range of physical and mental wellbeing issues. The app can be downloaded free of charge from the app store or google play.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h4>Deliver a mental health toolbox talk<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The talk should last about 1 hour and should be presented to all employees to raise understanding of the issues surrounding mental health and the importance of starting a conversation and talking. This gives a more in-depth understanding of mental health and will provide some tools for colleagues to help signpost individuals who are struggling to get appropriate help.<\/p>\n<p>For a list of construction aligned mental health awareness training visit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buildingmentalhealth.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.buildingmentalhealth.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h4>Ensure you have enough mental health first aiders for your place of work<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Set a policy within your company to have a healthy ratio of certified Mental Health First Aiders for every worker or contractor on site. There is no doubt that the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and the work they are doing to support those in need in our industry are making huge strides in the right direction. But they can only do that with the industry\u2019s ongoing support.<\/p>\n<p>Their \u2018Save a Life\u2019 campaign urges companies to pledge an annual donation so that there is predictable and sustainable income to plan for the future and continue to extend their charitable services.
