{"id":60489,"date":"2019-07-23T08:59:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T07:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=60489"},"modified":"2019-07-23T08:59:43","modified_gmt":"2019-07-23T07:59:43","slug":"property-flood-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/property-flood-resilience\/60489\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a32.9m funding to boost property flood resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Communities across England are set to be better protected against the impacts of flooding thanks to \u00a32.9m of government investment, environment minister Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Coffey has confirmed<\/h2>\n<p>Following a competitive evaluation process, three projects across Yorkshire, Devon and Cornwall and central England have been chosen to receive up to \u00a3700,000 each to boost research into, and uptake of, property-level measures which can better protect homes and businesses from flooding.<\/p>\n<p>The funding will go towards new research initiatives, demonstration centres and advice portals which will help people to learn about the benefits of installing measures in their homes which can significantly reduce the potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/developing-solutions-to-reduce-the-impact-of-flooding-in-uk-properties\/36832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">impacts of flooding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining funding will be used to boost further research, support project delivery and evaluation as well as initiatives to share the findings and lessons learned from the three projects across the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Property-level flood resilience can include a range of measures to reduce the damage that flooding can cause to buildings. This can include installing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/flood-door-not-flood-door\/55943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flood doors<\/a>, hard floors and ensuring that electrics are raised off ground level around the home.<\/p>\n<p>Environment minister Coffey, said: \u201cI am delighted to award funding to the pathfinder flood resilience projects in the Ox-Cam arc, Yorkshire and the South West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect the councils and organisations involved will increase the take-up of property resilience measures by homeowners and businesses, making their properties safer, and quicker to return to if flooding does happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The flood resilience projects<\/h3>\n<p>The Oxford-Cambridge Pathfinder, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.northamptonshire.gov.uk\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northamptonshire County Council<\/a>, will be centred on the delivery of one million high-quality homes across a wide area, including neighbouring counties, by 2050. Ten communities will be identified to engage with the project, ensuring resources to promote and install property flood resilience are prioritised in the areas most vulnerable to the impacts of flooding.<\/p>\n<p>The Yorkshire Future Flood Resilience Pathfinder project, delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of York Council<\/a>, will work with communities, planning and construction professionals, the construction industry and the insurance sector. This initiative will encourage greater uptake of property flood resilience measures across the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee area.<\/p>\n<p>The South West Partnership project, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwall.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornwall County Council<\/a>, will focus on local innovation to enhance the future take-up of property flood resilience measures. As well as establishing a demonstration hub and web portal it will seek to simplify and streamline processes, increasing the flood resilience of communities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.<\/p>\n<p>The projects will be delivered with support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/environment-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environment Agency<\/a>, the non-departmental body responsible for managing flood risk in England, and representatives of the insurance and construction industries. The Environment Agency will also monitor the projects to highlight successes and identify lessons that can be used to foster greater use of property flood resilience measures elsewhere across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Howard Boyd, chair of the Environment Agency, added: \u201cThis new funding is a welcome step forwards for our efforts to boost the uptake of property-level resilience measures in homes and businesses across the country.
