{"id":60739,"date":"2019-07-25T14:16:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T13:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=60739"},"modified":"2019-07-25T14:16:23","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T13:16:23","slug":"besa-climate-pledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/besa-climate-pledge\/60739\/","title":{"rendered":"BESA urges members to support industry-led climate pledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Building Engineering Services Association<\/a> (BESA) has backed historic industry-led declarations committed to tackling the \u2018crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Several large construction consultants and structural engineers, including Aecom, Arup, Atkins, BuroHappold, Mott MacDonald and WSP, have signed declarations titled \u2018<em>UK Building Services Declare<\/em>, <em>UK Structural Engineers Declare <\/em>and<em> UK Civil Engineers Declare\u2019,<\/em> and have committed to 11 points of action towards the climate pledge.<\/p>\n<h3>Some of these climate pledge commitments include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing structural engineering design that achieves the standard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/planning-smart-energy\/60298\/\">net-zero carbon<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Raising awareness of the issue among clients and supply chains;<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating the shift to low embodied carbon materials;<\/li>\n<li>Evaluating new projects with mitigating climate change as a key consideration and upgrading existing buildings as an alternative to demolition and rebuild.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BESA has urged its members to add their names as signatories for the climate pledge.<\/p>\n<p>BESA CEO David Frise, said: \u201cThese declarations are both momentous and timely. Following the recent net-zero commitment by the government, it is very encouraging to see such ambitious commitments being driven by the industry itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge of the declarations will be to translate them into meaningful action.
