Project Etopia<\/a> has kicked-off the construction of a landmark demonstration home at the Building Research Establishment<\/a> (BRE) with the hopes of being the first to meet a new UK offsite construction standard<\/h2>\n

The weather and fire resilient home being constructed at BRE\u2019s Watford Innovation Park<\/a> is intended to be the first modular home in Britain to be awarded the body\u2019s soon-to-be-released BPS 7014 Standard for Modular Systems for Dwellings<\/em> certification, the UK’s first offsite construction standard.<\/p>\n

The introduction of an offsite construction standard aims to be a watershed moment for the industry.<\/p>\n

\"offsite<\/a>Ground was broken yesterday (4 September) by Project Etopia CEO Joseph Daniels<\/a> and the company\u2019s chairman, Lord Stanley Fink<\/a>. The ground floor was completed in just two hours.<\/p>\n

The building \u2014 which uses Etopia\u2019s panelised build system \u2014 hopes to be a leading example of how modular housing can embrace eco-technology to create high-quality, greener homes that significantly reduce electricity bills for consumers.<\/p>\n

BRE\u2019s offsite construction standard BPS 7014 will assess levels of performance of buildings using Modern Methods of Construction<\/a> (MMC) against sustainability and building standards.<\/p>\n

Project Etopia\u2019s house will be tested for its ability to withstand hurricanes, fires and floods. It will be thoroughly evaluated to prove it can match up to \u2014 and surpass \u2014 the equivalent building regulations as bricks and mortar homes.<\/p>\n

\"offsite<\/a>The panelised walls in Project Etopia\u2019s home possess a U-value (a measure of thermal efficiency) of 0.13, which is superior to the 0.16 U-value for a typical well-insulated wall in a new build brick property.<\/p>\n

The build cost of the 108 sqm 3-bedroom detached house is around 20% less than a conventional home.<\/p>\n

Joseph Daniels, CEO of Project Etopia, said:\u00a0\u201cWe set out to be at the leading edge of the offsite construction sector and the fact that we are at BRE building the first demonstration home intended to meet the UK\u2019s first modular construction standard is testament to that.<\/p>\n
