{"id":62775,"date":"2019-09-06T11:23:28","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T10:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=62775"},"modified":"2019-09-06T11:23:28","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T10:23:28","slug":"smes-domestic-reverse-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/smes-domestic-reverse-charge\/62775\/","title":{"rendered":"One in 10 construction SMES \u2018won\u2019t withstand\u2019 domestic reverse charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>More than one in 10 SMEs in the construction industry supply chain say their cash flow will not be able to cope with the domestic reverse charge, according to new research carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsoncontract.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson Contract<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The domestic reverse charge comes into effect on 1 October and means those at the top of the construction industry supply chain will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-vat-rules-in-construction\/60610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charge and collect VAT<\/a> while suppliers must report the tax but be unable to collect it.<\/p>\n<p>The new measure is expected to deliver a massive cash boost to the major contractors, a number of which have well-documented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tackle-poor-payment-practices\/49907\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, the impact on SMEs is likely to send shockwaves through the supply chain with each of those surveyed having an average of five subcontractors.<\/p>\n<h3>Hudson\u2019s domestic reverse charge survey of 1,290 companies in the sector revealed the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>11% of companies surveyed (144) said they would not be able to withstand the impact to their cash flow from the VAT domestic reverse charge<\/li>\n<li>65% of companies surveyed (825) believe they can withstand the impact to their cash flow but warned it would have a negative effect<\/li>\n<li>24% of companies surveyed (321) said they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/drc-construction\/62354\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not aware of the new measure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ian Anfield, managing director of Hudson Contract, said: \u201cThe reverse charge will boost major contractors\u2019 cash flow at the expense of SMEs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailing outsourcers will be rubbing their hands together in glee as once again public money floods into their cash-strapped accounts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe companies surveyed have combined turnover of more than \u00a35bn.
