{"id":64765,"date":"2019-10-11T12:09:17","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T11:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=64765"},"modified":"2019-10-14T14:23:15","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T13:23:15","slug":"chapter-house-st-albans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/chapter-house-st-albans\/64765\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Sinden completes Welcome Centre at St Albans Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomas-sinden.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Sinden<\/a> has completed a new single storey Welcome Centre, connecting the Norman cathedral with the 20th century Chapter House<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u00a37m plus project has been funded by around \u00a34.2m from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritagefund.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Lottery Heritage Fund<\/a>, and over \u00a33m raised by the Cathedral through more than 1,000 donors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Work on the oldest site of continuous Christian worship began in May 2017, when archaeologists from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canterburytrust.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canterbury Archaeological Trust<\/a> (CAT) performed a dig to explore the foundations of what is now the new Welcome Centre. Between 1750 and 1852, this area was known to have been used as a parish graveyard and the team from CAT found a very concentrated burial site.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Graeme Sinden, director of Thomas Sinden, comments: \u201cIt has been an honour for Thomas Sinden to be part of such an historic and significant project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We have extensive experience working on heritage projects and throughout the build our team worked closely with the archaeologists and team at the cathedral to ensure everything was protected and preserved, whilst we sympathetically connected the main Grade I listed Cathedral to the 1980s Chapter House building. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?s=St+Albans+Cathedral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The work on St Albans Cathedral<\/a> has been a flagship project for our company and we look forward to seeing visitors of all ages enjoy the new Welcome Centre for many years to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Andy Davey of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simpsonandbrown.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simpson &amp; Brown Architects<\/a>, said: \u201cIt has been both a pleasure and a challenge working on the new Welcome Centre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Designing a new building to slot into the constricted space between the grandiose mass of the historic cathedral and Sir William Whitfield\u2019s modern and highly respected Chapter House has been a demanding task, and one which has called for balancing many different requirements and opinions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAlthough the finished building is deliberately intended to be respectfully understated \u2013 taking its design lead from the historic boundary wall that once enclosed the Monks\u2019 Graveyard on the site \u2013 our overall aim has been that it should also engender an uplifting and exciting sense of arrival for visitors to the Cathedral, so that their appreciation of this very special place will be greatly enhanced, and passed on to others in the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new building is part of a major redevelopment programme which will boost awareness of the historic church\u2019s 1,700-year history. The Cathedral was built on the burial site of Alban \u2013 Britain\u2019s first Christian martyr. The ancient structure is thought to be Britain\u2019s first Christian shrine and the country\u2019s longest serving centre of Christian worship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project has also created a new exhibition focusing on the unique history of the church which currently receives over 200,000 visitors a year.
