{"id":64822,"date":"2019-10-14T08:51:03","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T07:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=64822"},"modified":"2019-10-14T08:51:05","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T07:51:05","slug":"affordable-homes-green-belt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/affordable-homes-green-belt\/64822\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 1 in 10 homes built on Green Belt land deemed \u2018affordable\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>According to a report by countryside charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpre.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPRE<\/a>, only 1 in 10 homes built on land released from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/green-belt-land-housing-crisis\/54448\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Belt<\/a> are \u2018affordable\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The \u2018Space to Breathe, A State of the Green Belt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpre.org.uk\/resources\/housing-and-planning\/green-belts\/item\/5189-space-to-breathe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Report<\/a>\u2019 says harmful building on the Green Belt is squandering this valuable asset at a time when it is needed for our own health and wellbeing and to combat the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<h3>Key findings of the report showed:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In the past decade, only 1 in 10 new homes built on land released from the Green Belt are considered \u2018affordable\u2019, showing that building on the Green Belt is not the solution to the affordable housing crisis\u2019;<\/li>\n<li>This trend looks set to continue in the future as research shows there are proposals for a further 266,000 homes on undeveloped land, in the countryside, with only a third of these likely to be classified as \u2018affordable\u2019; and<\/li>\n<li>Building on the Green Belt is inefficient and land hungry, with the average density of homes within these just 14 dwellings per hectare, compared to an average of 31 outside these designated green areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CPRE\u2019s recommendations include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Better and existing solutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cost-ending-housing-crisis\/61174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fix the housing crisis<\/a> such as building on brownfield sites;<\/li>\n<li>Enhancement of the Green Belt so it is valued as much by local authorities, government and developers, as it is by local communities; and<\/li>\n<li>Stronger evidence-based tests for planning proposals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tom Fyans, deputy chief executive of CPRE, said: \u201cBuilding homes on the Green Belt is not the answer to the housing crisis. Indeed, in terms of the Green Belt, it\u2019s clear that we are reaching a tipping point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe increasing number of new homes proposed on the Green Belt has continued to rise since the report was first undertaken in 2012, despite the fact that these homes are not delivering promised affordable housing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe must not allow our Green Belt to be gobbled up, but instead focus on building affordable homes in which young struggling families can actually live.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe countryside around our urban areas provide a huge opportunity to help us in our efforts to address the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis, while supporting the improved health and well-being of everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter ways to tackle the housing crisis exist, such as a \u2018brownfield first\u2019 policy.
