{"id":65025,"date":"2019-10-15T12:02:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T11:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=65025"},"modified":"2019-10-15T12:02:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T11:02:27","slug":"planbee-programme-supported-by-humphrey-me-consultants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/planbee-programme-supported-by-humphrey-me-consultants\/65025\/","title":{"rendered":"New sponsor supports scheme to attract young talent into construction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>An engineering consultancy has pledged its support for an innovative scheme designed to attract young talent into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/future-built-environment-reshaping\/33502\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">built environment industry<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhumphrey.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Humphrey M&amp;E (Mechanical &amp; Electrical) Consultants<\/a>, headquartered in Newcastle, has signed up to become a sponsor of the PlanBEE programme \u2013 to attract young talent into construction.<\/p>\n<p>PlanBEE is a unique, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/planbee-scheme-successfully-creates-job-for-apprentices\/42279\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flexible training programme<\/a>, launched in 2016 to attract and retain the brightest new talent in the region. It also aims to plug skills gaps and create a more flexible workforce, capable of working across various construction disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme started when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gateshead.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gateshead College<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryderarchitecture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryder Architecture<\/a> formed an alliance with a network of architects, designers, contractors and engineering specialists. Rather than students completing their qualifications while working in one company, the PlanBEE programme gives trainees the chance to work across several companies and therefore gain a greater understanding of the built environment industry.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Huxtable, an 18 year old from<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Morpeth<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0is the first PlanBEE student on placement at Humphrey M&amp;E Consultants. He explained: \u201cIt\u2019s great to be able to learn my trade at such a reputable company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m getting to know all about the different elements of what makes a successful construction project and the mentoring and support system here at the company is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Lau, joint managing director at\u00a0Humphrey M&amp;E Consultants, said:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to become a sponsor for PlanBEE. There\u2019s a shortage of construction industry skills across the board and we want to bring in hungry, young talent to keep us competitive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cPlanBEE gives us this opportunity. We\u2019ve not seen a training programme like it in the UK; it\u2019s a great way of giving our staff a broad understanding of the industry and all of the skills needed to be successful in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Attracting young talent into construction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Working with Gateshead College, the PlanBEE programme provides budding professionals with the ability to study and train at the college\u2019s construction facility on Team Valley. It also provides them with the opportunity to work with some of the region\u2019s leading companies.<\/p>\n<p>The programme has been tailored specifically for and by the North East construction sector, providing students with a starting salary of \u00a311,383 per year, a professional qualification and a guaranteed job opportunity on graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Established by Ryder Architecture, the scheme has already attracted some high-profile names, including; Brims Construction, NBS,\u00a0Desco, BIM Academy, Sir Robert McAlpine,\u00a0Xsite\u00a0Architecture, Robertson, 3e Consulting, Cundall, Arup,\u00a0FaulknerBrowns, Sadler Brown Architecture and\u00a0Tolent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Chris Toon, deputy principal at Gateshead College, said:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to have Humphrey M&amp;E Consultants on board as the PlanBEE programme gathers momentum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long the construction industry has suffered from unfit-for-purpose training that hasn\u2019t really delivered the right skills for employers.
