{"id":66503,"date":"2019-10-31T14:05:39","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T14:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=66503"},"modified":"2019-10-31T14:05:39","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T14:05:39","slug":"freedom-build-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/freedom-build-infrastructure\/66503\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Councils should be given more power to deliver infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoncouncils.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Councils<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonchamber.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Chamber of Commerce and Industry<\/a>, 80% of businesses surveyed support giving councils more freedoms to fund and build infrastructure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Councils should be given more power to deliver infrastructure and housing in their communities, say the majority of businesses in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to funding and building more houses, 78% of businesses surveyed agreed that London councils should have more freedoms to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The figures come from the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoncouncils.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/London%20Business%201000%20-%20London%27s%20local%20business%20survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Business 1000 Survey<\/a>\u2019, based upon ComRes polling of 1000 London business decision-makers about the skills and recruitment challenges their companies face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">London needs 66,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/thomas-sinden-new-homes\/60449\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new homes<\/a> to be built each year to meet demand from residents, according to GLA projections. The capital is also in urgent need of infrastructure investment such as <a href=\"https:\/\/crossrail2.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crossrail 2<\/a> and full fibre broadband.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Councillor Clare Coghill, London Councils\u2019 executive member for Business, Europe and Good Growth, said: \u201cWe are very pleased to be publishing the results of the third year of this successful initiative with LCCI. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;This year\u2019s survey shows that London businesses are hugely supportive of London\u2019s boroughs having greater powers and freedoms to address the city\u2019s greatest challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese findings highlight the importance of London local government in delivering much-needed homes and infrastructure, which are crucial to businesses and their staff and therefore play a role in supporting London\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGetting more freedoms from central government is increasingly important, as making progress with housing and infrastructure projects will become even more challenging in light of the recent increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmo.gov.uk\/responsibilities\/local-authority-lending-pwlb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Works Loan Board<\/a> borrowing costs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cUsing this new polling, London Councils will continue to work with LCCI to make our case to central government for greater devolution to London boroughs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Peter Bishop, chief executive of London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLondon has unique housing and infrastructure needs, due to its large and growing population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur latest polling builds on our previous research undertaken with businesses, continuing to show a majority desire for devolution of control and funding from Whitehall to London level in order to tackle some of the capital\u2019s major challenges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">More than seven in ten businesses surveyed in the London Business 1,000 Survey agreed with statements about giving councils greater powers, freedoms and control across a range of service areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the polling, 70% of London business leaders agree that London\u2019s boroughs should have more control over local taxes, such as council tax and business rates.
