Birmingham railway station to be rebuilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The outdated Birmingham railway station at Perry Barr is set to be transformed as part of the wider regeneration plan of the area<\/h2>\n<p>The development will see a new station building constructed, offering passengers a welcoming, accessible and safe environment.<\/p>\n<p>The redevelopment of the outdated Birmingham railway station will feature new lighting, CCTV coverage, accessible toilets, covered waiting areas, lifts to the platforms and a drop-off area for taxis and disabled blue badge holders.<\/p>\n<p>The new building replaces the current, underwhelming 1960s station entrance squeezed between shops.\u00a0There will also be improved pedestrian links to a redesigned bus interchange outside the One Stop Shopping Centre.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/transport-improvements-programme\/57811\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new access route for buses<\/a> will ease congestion and improve journey times for passengers, including those using the proposed new Sprint rapid bus transit service between Birmingham and Walsall.<\/p>\n<p>Development of the bus and rail interchange is due to take place as part of the wider \u00a3500m regeneration of Perry Barr, which includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/redevelop-alexander-stadium\/58588\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Athletes Village<\/a>, changes to the road network and introduction of Sprint rapid transit buses.<\/p>\n<p>These are all due to be completed in time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham2022.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games<\/a> when around 6,500 athletes and officials will be located at the village.<\/p>\n<p>The project is being led by the West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) and Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Network Rail and West Midlands Trains.<\/p>\n<h3>Public participation<\/h3>\n<p>Malcolm Holmes, executive director of the WMRE and director of rail for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tfwm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TfWM<\/a>, said: \u201cPerry Barr railway station is rightly seen by many as unattractive and unsafe and this redevelopment is long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would urge everyone who lives, works or travels through the area to look at our plans, attend our events, ask questions and send in their comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phil Edwards, assistant director for transport and connectivity at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham City Council<\/a>, said: \u201cThe railway station and bus interchange are important parts of the Perry Barr redevelopment project, improving connectivity across Birmingham and serving a growing population, so it is important that as many people as possible have their say on these
