{"id":67476,"date":"2019-11-15T10:40:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T10:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=67476"},"modified":"2022-09-29T10:37:52","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T09:37:52","slug":"kar-go-highway-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/kar-go-highway-management\/67476\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative autonomous car to support highway management"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academyofrobotics.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Academy of Robotics<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurovia.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eurovia UK<\/a> have announced plans for a national partnership to trial the use of Kar-go\u2019s autonomous vehicle technology to support rural highway management<\/h2>\n<p>The partnership will also aim to accelerate the \u2018training\u2019 of Kar-go to navigate on unmarked roads in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Academy of Robotics is the startup behind Kar-go, Europe\u2019s first road-based autonomous delivery vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Originally developed to reduce both the financial and environmental costs of last-mile parcel delivery, Eurovia UK recognised its potential for use in infrastructure and urban development work.<\/p>\n<p>Eurovia UK is keen to test the Kar-go technology to automate the delivery of small plant equipment, tools, materials and other components to and from a highway work sites. It also has the potential to use data collected by Kar-go as it travels to determine the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/road-safety-cities-benchmark\/49298\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">condition of roads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Eurovia UK, a specialist in maintaining and improving roads and public realm infrastructure will help Academy of Robotics to scale their training of autonomous vehicles.\u00a0This will be enabled by accessing digital camera data gathered by Eurovia\u2019s fleet in the UK, which covers over 50,000 kms of UK roads.<\/p>\n<p>The trial will initially focus on the UK, but as a global business operating in 15 countries, the deal offers significant potential for international expansion.<\/p>\n<h3>Understanding hazards \u2013 shadows vs. potholes<\/h3>\n<p>Academy of Robotics have been able to address the challenge of environmental variability and \u2018noise\u2019 caused by shadows and bright reflections.
