{"id":68107,"date":"2019-11-26T08:37:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T08:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=68107"},"modified":"2019-11-26T08:37:47","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T08:37:47","slug":"placemaking-healthcare-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/placemaking-healthcare-access\/68107\/","title":{"rendered":"Placemaking can reduce unequal access to healthcare, says Mace"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Placemaking interventions can help reduce the impact of unequal access to healthcare in areas across the country, reducing overall inequality, a new report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macegroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mace<\/a> has stated<\/h2>\n<p>The report, \u2018Joining the dots: moving beyond place to help solve the UK\u2019s inequality problem\u2019, outlines a number of solutions that could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/more-attention-to-design\/58872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help local authorities<\/a>, the NHS and developers tackle inequality and poor healthcare outcomes through placemaking.<\/p>\n<p>The research shows that placemaking interventions can help minimise the impact of unequal access to healthcare in areas across the country, decreasing overall inequality and delivering better outcomes while saving money for the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>The findings come in conjunction with new polling, done by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.survation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Survation<\/a> on behalf of Mace, which discovered that the majority of the country don\u2019t trust any political party to deliver \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/design-planning-process\/67191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good places to live<\/a>\u2019 and that 90% of people rate healthcare facilities and low crime rates as the most important factors when choosing where to live.<\/p>\n<h3>The placemaking approach<\/h3>\n<p>A placemaking approach to housing requires Government support for \u2018supercharged\u2019 development corporations, taking on the challenge of integrating transport connections, healthcare and education to deliver better outcomes for people.<\/p>\n<p>Durham Dales, Blackpool and Knowsley are among the areas that would benefit the most from a placemaking approach to solving inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>Granting funding to development corporations through Homes England could see more people gaining access to healthcare facilities. The research shows that this would reduce the number of additional GPs that need to be recruited \u2013 estimated to be 14,000.<\/p>\n<h4>Mace\u2019s recommendations to address the UK&#8217;s inequality crisis include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Implement supercharged development corporations<\/li>\n<li>Embrace Foreign Direct Investment Finance (FDIF)<\/li>\n<li>Homes England loans<\/li>\n<li>Accelerated planning process for applications that meet placemaking requirements<\/li>\n<li>Establish a placemaking levy<\/li>\n<li>Healthcare housing<\/li>\n<li>Modify NHS planning guidance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jason Millett, COO for consultancy at Mace, commented: \u201cOur research shows how targeted placemaking interventions could help close some of the inequalities that exist around the UK;
