{"id":68502,"date":"2019-12-02T12:11:40","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T12:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=68502"},"modified":"2022-09-29T10:36:12","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T09:36:12","slug":"ai-critical-concrete-strength","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/ai-critical-concrete-strength\/68502\/","title":{"rendered":"BAM uses AI to predict critical strength of concrete"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The world\u2019s first artificial intelligence (AI) concrete strength prediction engine has been used on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamnuttall.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Nuttall\u2019s<\/a> project to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/london-city-airport-expansion-blocked-mayor\/15719\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expand London City Airport<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>\u200bFunding from an Innovate UK grant was used to develop the strength prediction engine, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/converge.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Converge<\/a>. The engine takes advantage of Converge\u2019s concrete performance data set.<\/p>\n<p>Within hours of the concrete being poured, Converge claimed it can predict the time a critical strength will be reached with an accuracy of +\/- 5%, several days in advance, by applying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/five-construction-technology\/62164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">machine learning<\/a> techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The predictions of the engine combines local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/bim-software-meets-weather-time\/62233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weather data<\/a>, historical concrete curing data, and the Converge concrete monitoring platform\u2019s real-time measurements from the pour.<\/p>\n<p>Converge and BAM Nuttall said the system could improve productivity and keep projects on track, saving millions of pounds if concrete sits in the critical path.<\/p>\n<p>Head of innovation at BAM Nuttall, Colin Evison, said: \u201cThis advancement in construction technology is a game changer. The Converge prediction engine gives us insight into material performance we didn&#8217;t think possible. We are delighted to be Converge\u2019s industry partner in bringing this exciting new tool to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Converge product lead, Sam Ellenby, added: \u201cOur users were waiting for concrete to hit a critical strength before scheduling the next activity, but this often meant that the site teams needed to strike formwork or tension the slab were deployed in other areas when the time came to act.
