{"id":68556,"date":"2019-12-03T09:01:26","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T09:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=68556"},"modified":"2019-12-03T09:04:29","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T09:04:29","slug":"luton-dart-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/luton-dart-bridge\/68556\/","title":{"rendered":"1,000 tonne Luton DART bridge opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The bridge, which will carry each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dart.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DART shuttle<\/a> over the A1081, has opened 10 hours early, following the installation of an 80-metre long, 1,000-tonne curved bridge<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkerfitzpatrick.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VolkerFitzpatrick<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kier.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kier<\/a> joint-venture constructed the bridge offsite, adjacent to the Percival Way roundabout, over an eight-month period. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was then transported half a mile to the site, using self-propelled modular transporters. The structure was raised up using jacks, positioned and carefully lowered into place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The bridge will form an integral part of the new Luton DART fast transit system. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The whole operation was successfully completed over the course of three days and required significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">planning and collaboration<\/a> between VolkerFitzpatrick-Kier, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llal.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Luton Airport Ltd<\/a> and Luton Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"0vS3Yrm0C5s\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Luton DART bridge installation\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vS3Yrm0C5s?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Phil Hobson, project director at the Luton DART, said: \u201cThis was an especially challenging project milestone to reach and required a huge collaborative effort between all parties. The team worked incredibly well together to successfully install the bridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEvery aspect of the installation was specialised and complex. From setting up the temporary ramps to moving the bridge, which took us over two hours. Each operation over the weekend was expertly planned and we are really pleased to have reached this vital point in construction of the project.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ciaran Scanlon, LLAL programme delivery director, said: \u201cThis has been an exciting achievement and a hugely significant milestone in the delivery of the innovative DART scheme. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The whole project has been full of engineering challenges and to move an object of this size ranks as one of the biggest.
