{"id":68557,"date":"2019-12-03T08:55:47","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T08:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=68557"},"modified":"2019-12-03T08:55:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T08:55:47","slug":"sky-studio-at-elstree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/sky-studio-at-elstree\/68557\/","title":{"rendered":"Sky reveals plans to develop 32-acre studio at Elstree"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sky<\/a> has announced its plans for a new 32-acre TV and film studio at Elstree, home to the world-renowned Elstree Studios, which will see over 2,000 jobs created<\/h2>\n<p>The proposed development at Elstree will be made with the support of Sky\u2019s new owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comcast<\/a>, and in partnership with sister-company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcuniversal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBCUniversal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalandgeneral.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Legal &amp; General<\/a> will develop its site and provide financing for the project.<\/p>\n<p>Sky Studios Elstree will be situated in the borough of Hertsmere. Legal &amp; General are in the process of finalising a detailed design of the scheme and expect to submit a formal planning application early next year.<\/p>\n<p>Sky Studios Elstree will work in close collaboration with Elstree Studios despite both businesses being managed independently of each other.<\/p>\n<h3>The new Sky Studios Elstree will:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Create over 2000 new jobs and help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/report-suggests-green-space-boosts-local-economy\/39050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boost the local economy<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Generate an additional\u00a0\u00a33bn of production investment\u00a0in the UK\u2019s creative economy over the first five years of operation, from Sky, NBCUniversal and other producers<\/li>\n<li>House\u00a014 sound stages\u00a0and become a new home for the best of British and European creative talent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Subject to planning consent, the development is expected to open in 2022 and will allow the production of several films and TV shows simultaneously, with each of the 14 sound stages covering over 20,000 sqft.<\/p>\n<p>Once complete, the site will include production offices, a set construction workshop, a screening cinema and post-production and digital facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The new studio space will also play host to major film productions from Universal Pictures, Focus Features and Working Title, and television series from NBCUniversal Content Studios. It will also have the capacity to host productions from third party producers.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Darroch, group chief executive of Sky, said: \u201cSky Studios Elstree will play a pivotal role in bringing the wealth of UK and European talent and creativity to the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to be working with our colleagues at NBCUniversal and Comcast, and our partners Hertsmere Borough Council and L&amp;G to bring this project to life. Together we share a joint vision to create a world-leading production capability that will support the creation of thousands of jobs in the creative sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sajida Bijle, interim managing director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hertsmere.gov.uk\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hertsmere Borough Council<\/a>, added: \u201cThis presents a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our creative industries in Hertsmere and build on our proud film and television heritage in the Borough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis scheme would bring significant employment opportunities to the region and put Elstree firmly on the global stage, whilst further enhancing our local film tourism.
