A quarter of this, around \u00a313bn, will be invested in providing resilient services and a better environment in the face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/national-flood-map\/68055\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate change<\/a> and a growing population.<\/p>\n<p>Customers will also see a reduction in average bills of about \u00a350 before inflation. The regulator has secured this by demanding greater efficiency, passing through lower financing costs and promoting more innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Ofwat has set new levels of service so water companies transform their performance over the next five years. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cutting leakage by 16% saving enough water to meet the needs of everyone in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield<\/li>\n<li>Identifying and helping an additional two million customers who need extra support<\/li>\n<li>Reducing pollution into rivers and streams by almost a third<\/li>\n<li>Investing over \u00a31bn to protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/reduce-impact-of-flooding\/33964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">communities at risk of flooding<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Preparing for drier weather by providing \u00a3450m to explore new water resources such as reservoirs or moving water from where there is lots to places with less<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u00a313bn of additional investment \u2013 equivalent to \u00a36m every day for five years \u2013 will see a new reservoir built in Hampshire, the construction of a pipeline connecting water supplies from North Lincolnshire to Essex amongst other things.<\/p>\n<p>Ofwat recognises that Londoners deserve a better level of service. Therefore, the regulator is stepping in to protect customers by allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thameswater.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thames Water<\/a> to bid for up to an additional \u00a3480m to deliver improved service resilience.
