{"id":70001,"date":"2020-01-13T14:11:29","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T14:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=70001"},"modified":"2020-01-13T14:11:29","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T14:11:29","slug":"science-and-engineering-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/science-and-engineering-building\/70001\/","title":{"rendered":"MMU submits plans for new \u00a365m science and engineering building"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.mmu.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchester Metropolitan University<\/a> has submitted plans to build a new science and engineering building in place of the John Dalton West building<\/h2>\n<p>Plans for the new state-of-the-art science and engineering building at MMU have been submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchester City Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project would see the existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/mmu-65m-science-and-engineering-campus\/48315\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Dalton West building demolished<\/a> and a new, seven-storey academic building constructed in its place.<\/p>\n<p>The development would provide for the Faculty of Science and Engineering new teaching spaces, cutting-edge laboratories, academic offices, social learning areas and a new energy centre, as well as extensive public realm works.<\/p>\n<p>The current John Dalton Tower will be refurbished and connected to the new development.<\/p>\n<p>New pedestrian routes across the site will be provided within new landscaping, which will create an accessible external environment, particularly to the Chester Street frontage.<\/p>\n<h3>Drive new scientific discovery<\/h3>\n<p>Professor Andrew Gibson, pro-vice-chancellor of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan, said: \u201cThe new building represents our ambition as a faculty and will help us to drive new scientific discovery that will benefit our students, the region and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe development will help the University to continue its role in nurturing innovation in critical research to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, including hydrogen fuel cell technology, Industry 4.0 technologies, sport and healthcare science, and supporting a sustainable society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National planning and development consultancy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turley.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turley<\/a> is providing planning.<\/p>\n<h3>Science and engineering building to facilitate growth<\/h3>\n<p>Anna Relph, associate director at Turley, commented: \u201cThis is a fantastic project which we\u2019re delighted to be part of. The University\u2019s Faculty of Science and Engineering makes a significant contribution towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/developer-led-regeneration-greater-manchester\/48598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greater Manchester<\/a> economy through its ground-breaking research and partnerships with local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new building will facilitate the continued growth of the faculty by providing additional state-of-the-art facilities and enhancing the efficiency of the retained estate.
