{"id":70607,"date":"2020-01-23T10:20:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T10:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=70607"},"modified":"2020-01-23T10:20:46","modified_gmt":"2020-01-23T10:20:46","slug":"building-safety-regulator-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/building-safety-regulator-2\/70607\/","title":{"rendered":"IOSH urges \u2018visible action\u2019 from new building safety regulator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iosh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institution of Occupational Safety and Health<\/a> (IOSH) has responded to the new HSE regulator announcement, urging \u201cvisible and tangible action\u201d on improving building safety<\/h2>\n<p>Following Robert Jenrick&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/housing-building-safety\/70444\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent announcement<\/a>, the IOSH has welcomed the new Building Safety Regulator within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a> (HSE) from the UK government.<\/p>\n<p>This announcement will see building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-measures-to-improve-building-safety-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safety improvements<\/a> accelerate and call for visible and tangible action to now be taken.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, IOSH\u00a0urged the government to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iosh.com\/more\/news-listing\/new-government-must-get-health-and-safety-done\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get health and safety done<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and pushed for urgent progress on all the key occupational safety and health public-policy areas, including national \u2018post-Grenfell\u2019 reforms on building regulation and fire safety.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement includes the immediate establishment of a new Building Safety Regulator within the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as well as a proposal to extend the existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/combustible-cladding-wales\/69458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">combustible cladding ban<\/a> and accelerate its removal from buildings across the country.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;We now need to see visible and tangible action&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Richard Jones, head of policy and regulatory engagement at IOSH, said: \u201cWhile it\u2019s positive to hear the new government declare it won\u2019t tolerate the slow pace of improvement to building safety in the UK, which IOSH and others have raised concern over, we now need to see visible and tangible action, with these announcements just the start of an extensive and active delivery-programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with the HSE will be reassuring for many, given it\u2019s a world-class regulator that secures near-universal praise nationally. It has successful experience of co-regulation, as well as of operating permissioning and safety-case regimes and enforcing the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, so should be ideally placed for such a role.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, it will be vital that it\u2019s properly resourced for taking on this substantial additional responsibility and workload for this new regime, which we understand will be fully chargeable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn IOSH\u2019s response to the combustible cladding ban consultation, we emphasised the need to remove it from all high-rises in both residential and non-residential buildings.
