{"id":70818,"date":"2020-01-28T09:15:59","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T09:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=70818"},"modified":"2020-01-28T09:15:59","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T09:15:59","slug":"indoor-air-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/indoor-air-pollution\/70818\/","title":{"rendered":"Indoor air pollution linked to respiratory problems in children"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Indoor air pollution in homes, schools and nurseries has been linked to respiratory problems among children, according to a joint report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpch.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health<\/a> (RCPCH) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcplondon.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal College of Physicians<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The report, informed by a RCPCH commissioned systematic review of 221 studies, presents evidence linking indoor air pollution to a range of childhood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/indoor-air-quality-role-health-inside-story\/34383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health problems<\/a> including asthma, wheezing, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, and eczema.<\/p>\n<p>Sources of indoor air pollution include smoking, damp, the burning of fossil fuels and wood, dust, chemicals from building materials and furnishings, aerosol sprays, and cleaning products.<\/p>\n<h3>Report recommendations<\/h3>\n<p>The report recommends that local authorities should have the power to require improvements where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/indoor-air-quality\/46002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">air quality<\/a> fails to meet minimum standards in local authority schools and houses. This should be extended, according to the authors, beyond damp and mould (where powers already exist) to include other pollutants. The report recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legally binding performance standards for indoor air quality to include ventilation rates, maximum concentration levels for specific pollutants, labelling of materials, and testing of appliances<\/li>\n<li>Air quality tests when local authority construction is complete and before the building is signed off<\/li>\n<li>Compliance tests after construction stages and assessment of buildings once occupied \u2013 this may require ring-fenced resources for local authorities to take enforcement action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>NICE guidelines for indoor air quality<\/h3>\n<p>The report suggests local authorities should follow the NICE guidelines for \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/wf\/click?upn=fAh4bEM-2BJ-2F8MbZ7-2BZ1AJ3TXt3YLbuV-2B-2B7lL2j-2BqYIFgx9q7XYd-2Br9EothBUs3dzwVXth-2Bwv4pqs6mUfp-2FEfyBJoxEZYY2ADEs9OwlHuhSVY-3D_GkZOwv0bErIpE3pAtQCWPuFAETtQRiNPfax9eXkUvtxLpiyqX20wmdx20LZR4fw4hneJ4QAQ0AzUhVcDAXovnNaPkqbfTeLgNyYAesr-2BXGnvbIfhQk0Yp3Gb8hUEP2wAMMaQK3BZV07-2B2NLzWiZAMyLbqfEnSy9-2BkMA0g1c9tAb5eWBUCAl-2FQ1geXEes31XSSK2Kf3LSo7blAYEkWTL2aQUlZ1EHjElHmmoABGPJ-2BX4Oo8HgXRZ-2Fna6Gif4KCNDxq-2FlxFJtYleFXn0XEfY6Hasq2yL0dgmXGs3UhEBw-2BuI-2FzQEW8TI4tj27FYW-2FwSLBOjmwm25bYjXivpQlHnid1uiRWBzi7olvyIh2jJ-2FNkZ0pV6I8FpHwBUgn7jSnus6SmseOaUc4Ibb06N576EKlgGwJ8iev24DZiDg2y6N6hHSEabZgcg24NM95sOh1pMXag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indoor air quality at home\u2019<\/a>. It warns \u201cexposure to indoor air pollution from cookers, damp, cleaning products and fires can irritate the lungs and exacerbate asthma symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It encourages people to ensure rooms are well ventilated by opening windows or using extractor fans, especially when cooking, drying clothes inside, or using sprays, solvents, and paints.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Jonathan Grigg, Paediatric Respiratory Consultant from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), commented: \u201cWe\u2019re finally paying attention to the quality of our outdoor air and this is long overdue. It\u2019s harder to get population level data on the quality of indoor air but the evidence in this report paints a worrying picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren in the UK spend most of their time indoors, with just 68 minutes spent outside on an average day. Too many of our homes and schools are damp and poorly ventilated \u2013 this is adversely affecting the health of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Free indoor air testing<\/h3>\n<p>The report states local authorities should provide free indoor air testing for residents. It recommends a national fund to support improvements for low income residents who report issues with ventilation and air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Stephen Holgate, special advisor for the Royal College of Physicians, added: \u201cPoorer households have fewer choices about where to live and where to go to school. More than three million families live in poor quality housing in the UK. Most will not have enough money to make improvements and have no option but to make do with damp, under-ventilated environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to offer support at local authority level \u2013 likewise with schools.
