{"id":71037,"date":"2020-01-31T08:36:44","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T08:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=71037"},"modified":"2020-01-31T08:36:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T08:36:44","slug":"martineau-galleries-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/martineau-galleries-planning\/71037\/","title":{"rendered":"First Birmingham City Quarters scheme gets the go-ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hammerson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hammerson<\/a> has been granted resolution on its outline planning application for a 7.5-acre mixed-use masterplan for Martineau Galleries in Birmingham<\/h2>\n<p>The plans for Martineau Galleries \u2013 the first scheme brought forward as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hammerson-city-quarters\/60960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">part of Hammerson\u2019s City Quarters concept<\/a> \u2013 will transform the current site into a new neighbourhood, providing homes, workspace, hotel rooms and a new town square.<\/p>\n<h3>City Quarters concept<\/h3>\n<p>Martineau Galleries received the green light from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham City Council<\/a> yesterday (30 January). It represents a significant step forward for the group\u2019s \u2018City Quarters\u2019 concept, which is dedicated to delivering vibrant mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding Hammerson\u2019s existing flagship destinations.<\/p>\n<p>The concept will see Hammerson transform many of its city venues, including Birmingham, beyond pure retail into successful new neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<h3>Martineau Galleries will deliver:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1,300 new homes for approximately 2,400 people who are predicted to spend in the region of \u00a323m per year on local goods and activities;<\/li>\n<li>110,000 overnight stays per year at a new hotel, bringing \u00a37m per year into the local economy;<\/li>\n<li>8,000 full-time jobs supported on-site;<\/li>\n<li>350 full-time construction jobs supported per year over the life of the project;<\/li>\n<li>A \u00a3225m boost to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/soho-wharf-approved\/71014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham\u2019s economy<\/a> and;<\/li>\n<li>A signature gateway to Birmingham adjacent to Curzon Street station.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The vibrant new neighbourhood will also provide a public realm, including a central square, boulevard and new residential streets, which will be accessible and sustainable. These spaces will be available for community and cultural events, and leisure activities such as pop-up bars, food trucks and performances from local groups.<\/p>\n<p>Robin Dobson, UK director of development and project management at Hammerson, commented: \u201cWe are pleased to confirm that our mixed-use masterplan for Martineau Galleries has been given a resolution to grant by Birmingham City Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHammerson has a strong track record in mixed-use placemaking and in delivering for Birmingham, having transformed the city centre with the opening of the iconic Bullring in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur plans for Martineau Galleries represent a step-change in our strategy, moving beyond pure retail, as we continue to deliver vibrant, continually evolving spaces, in and around thriving cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leader of Birmingham City Council councillor Ian Ward, added: \u201cThe exciting Martineau Galleries project will support over 8,000 jobs and provide a significant boost to our city economy.
