{"id":71090,"date":"2020-03-03T09:12:59","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T09:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=71090"},"modified":"2020-03-03T09:13:21","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T09:13:21","slug":"7d-bim-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/bim-news\/7d-bim-revolution\/71090\/","title":{"rendered":"Ground-breaking 7D BIM to radically reduce carbon and whole life cost"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartwrightpickard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cartwright Pickard<\/a> has joined forces with the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glasgow School of Art<\/a> to adapt 7D BIM processes<\/h2>\n<p>Cartwright Pickard and The Mackintosh School of Architecture aim to integrate whole-life cost estimation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/category\/bim-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Information Modelling<\/a> (BIM), assisting designers\u2019 decision-making based on accurate data of a building\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>The two have conducted research into how 7D BIM software could assist the government\u2019s commitment to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/buildings-operate-net-zero-carbon\/33469\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2050 target of net-zero carbon<\/a> and a 33% reduction in whole life cost by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The technology will integrate advanced BIM (Building Information Modelling) with cloud-based whole life cost and carbon databases, enabling those commissioning and designing buildings to make better and more informed decisions at every stage of the design process.<\/p>\n<h3>What is 7D BIM?<\/h3>\n<p>7D BIM allows those in architecture, engineering and construction industries to more accurately predict whole life costs, helping them to understand the long-term viability of alternative design options.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to move away from historical data, instead defining information requirements and data structures to collect data in-use and therefore monitor performance. This will also allow accurate financial projections for a building in operation.<\/p>\n<p>Industry partners working on this project alongside Cartwright Pickard and The Mackintosh School of Architecture include; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blpinsurance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BLP Insurance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/construction.morgansindall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Sindall Construction<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallifordtry.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galliford Try Partnerships<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosperitycapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prosperity Capital<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etexgroup.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Etex<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarelea.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hoare Lea<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanhopeplc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanhope<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliottwood.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elliott Wood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"hK4CjOo7GWw\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"7D BIM\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hK4CjOo7GWw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Data-driven decisions<\/h3>\n<p>The research conducted by Cartwright Pickard and Dr Mariangela Zanni backs data-driven decisions for safeguarding the future, empowering developers to deliver long-life, lower-cost buildings. This involves data collected during the design and construction phases of a project, as well as collating information once a building is complete, helping to inform new briefs and processes, providing accurate estimation of a building\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mariangela Zanni, head of research and sustainability at Cartwright Pickard, said: \u201cThe concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is well established, but we haven\u2019t yet unlocked the full value of this approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrawing on the concept of 7D BIM, the research aims to show that whole life building performance, and therefore the cost of operating a building, can be estimated from the earliest design stages of a project.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Building sustainability<\/h3>\n<p>7D BIM also addresses the crucial aspect of building sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Cartwright Pickard aims to transform the construction industry through 7D BIM, facilitating lower-maintenance buildings that create a reduction in waste.
