{"id":71243,"date":"2020-02-05T09:48:33","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T09:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=71243"},"modified":"2020-02-05T10:12:47","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T10:12:47","slug":"construct-a-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construct-a-career\/71243\/","title":{"rendered":"Wates joins Construct a Career initiative to deliver training"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Construct a Career is a solution to the skills shortage in the UK construction industry, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneillandbrennan.com\/construct-a-career\/employer\/196\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new programme<\/a> is in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wates Group<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Wates currently has a number of live sites across Brent that will offer job opportunities for graduates of Construct a Career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The British construction industry is facing a major recruitment crisis with 168,500 workers needed in the next five years. The Construct a Career initiative is the result of the collaboration between training organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidori.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cidori<\/a> and construction recruitment specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneillandbrennan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O\u2019Neill &amp; Brennan<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The programme includes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Construction of 149 new homes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brent.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Council<\/a> to offer independent living and temporary accommodation at Knowles House on Longstone Avenue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">10 year housing management programme to improve the council\u2019s social housing stock.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Construction of 732 new homes at Wembley Park, with another 633 under construction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The Construct a Career programme, combining pre-employment training and employment opportunities, took place in Brent from 20-31 January and offers a solution to this growing industry-wide issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Construct a Career offers candidates free training to ease access into the industry and ensure they are fit to work. By partnering with contractors and local councils, Construct a Career provides a solution to Section 106 obligations, placing local people in work while meeting the training requirements of their clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">With candidates gaining an opportunity to sit their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/cscs-card-exemption\/62619\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSCS test<\/a> and access a blend of face-to-face and online training, the scheme means that Construct a Career graduates will be certified to work on building sites across the UK. This will include access to hundreds of registered vacancies on local contracts and further afield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">31<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0January saw the 15 candidates complete their training in Brent, building on the national Construct a Career programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Diversity and inclusion<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\">Su Pickerill, group community investment manager, Wates, said: <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe have a big skills gap in the construction industry and we are really keen to become a more diverse and inclusive sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis kind of programme brings an opportunity to raise awareness about the construction industry and the vast range opportunities in it.
