{"id":71431,"date":"2020-02-07T12:35:37","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T12:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=71431"},"modified":"2021-04-08T10:07:31","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T09:07:31","slug":"rrs-sir-david-attenborough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/rrs-sir-david-attenborough\/71431\/","title":{"rendered":"[VIDEO] Getting ready for the Sir David Attenborough in Antarctica"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"rGCr3jgU1Uc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"British Antarctic Survey\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rGCr3jgU1Uc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>A major modernisation programme has started at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Antarctic Survey\u2019s<\/a> Rothera Research Station to prepare for the arrival of the RRS Sir David Attenborough in one of the most challenging construction environments on Earth<\/h2>\n<p>A 40-plus team from BAM Nuttall arrived in December to resume construction of a 74m wharf and carry out initial groundworks for the new 2,700 sq m science and operations building to berth the RRS Sir David Attenborough.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing the research station to berth the RRS Sir David Attenborough, which will be one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world, is a complex tax. In this summer season of work, the remaining 14 of 20 steel frames that form the wharf\u2019s skeleton will be put in place and backfilled with rock.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a crane for easier launching of small boats, a personnel gangway and a floating pontoon for the deployment of scientific instruments.<\/p>\n<h3>Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation programme<\/h3>\n<p>A key aim of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/rothera-research-station-work\/70941\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modernisation programme<\/a> is to reduce the station\u2019s consumption of fossil fuels and introduce more energy efficient systems, including heat recovery generators, photovoltaic solar panels and enhanced insulation.<\/p>\n<p>Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest and windiest place on the planet. Construction work can only take place during a short period in the austral summer (November to May).<\/p>\n<p>Martha McGowan, project manager at BAM, said: \u201cIt will be a busy season but we recognise the importance of our projects in helping BAS continue to deliver frontier science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Seaton, senior infrastructure programme manager at the British Antarctic Survey, added: \u201cAfter many months of planning, we are looking forward to achieving to key milestones at Rothera. There two projects \u2013 the wharf and modernisation \u2013 are critical to reducing operating costs, improving efficiency and keeping the research stations meeting the needs of BAS personnel to facilitate world-leading research for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/construction-project-data-antarctica\/54004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation<\/a> programme is commissioned by UKRI-NERC (<a href=\"https:\/\/nerc.ukri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural Environment Research Council<\/a>). It operates on a partnership model that includes technical adviser Ramboll, construction partner BAM and designer Sweco.
