{"id":71584,"date":"2020-02-11T15:16:03","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T15:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=71584"},"modified":"2020-02-11T15:16:05","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T15:16:05","slug":"construction-output-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-output-figures\/71584\/","title":{"rendered":"Increase in construction output figures reflect industry &#8216;resilience&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The latest construction output figures published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> (ONS) shows an increase of 0.5% in Q4 2019 compared with the previous quarter, as housebuilding finally &#8216;pulls its socks up&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Monthly construction output grew by 0.4% in December 2019, which according to the ONS figures shows an all-time since monthly records began in January 2010.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-output-august\/61257\/\">noticeable volatile monthly pattern<\/a> of construction output in Q4 2019, with October 2019 seeing a fall of 2.2% followed by a 2.4% rise in November 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-output-figures\/71584\/attachment\/construction-output-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-71605\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71605 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output.png\" alt=\"construction output,\" width=\"700\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output.png 700w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output-696x546.png 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output-536x420.png 536w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/construction-output-610x478.png 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction output is categorised into all new work and repair and maintenance. All new work accounted for approximately two-thirds of all work, while repair and maintenance accounted for one-third of all work.<\/p>\n<h3>Annual growth in 2019<\/h3>\n<p>Annual growth in 2019 construction output increased by 2.5%, compared with 2018. While this increase follows a 0% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-growth-eased-to-a-three-month-low-and-new-orders-expanded-at-a-relatively-subdued-pace\/50516\/\">growth in 2018<\/a>, it is still lower than in 2014 to 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of annual growth was thanks to new work, which grew by 3.4% following a 0.4% fall in 2018. In comparison, repair and maintenance growth since 2015 has continually been lower than new work (with the exception of 2018) growing by 0.7% in 2019.<\/p>\n<h4>New work<\/h4>\n<p>Following a decline in 2018, new work saw a recovery in 2019 with growth of 3.4%, though this is still markedly lower than in years prior to 2018. Private new housing work drove much of this growth, increasing by 4.3%, though this is the lowest year-on-year growth since 2012 when it fell 3.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure was the other large driver of growth in new work in 2019, increasing by 6.8%. The comparatively smaller public new housing series also provided a positive contribution with growth of 18.1%. In comparison, other new work, excluding infrastructure, saw a decline of 0.7% in 2019 following a 6.0% fall in 2018.<\/p>\n<h4>Repair and maintenance<\/h4>\n<p>Repair and maintenance growth slowed to 0.7% in 2019 from 0.8% in 2018, and there was a mixed profile of growth within repair and maintenance sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Private housing repair and maintenance was the largest negative contributor in 2019, falling by 1.7% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>This was more than offset by a growth of 2.7% in non-housing repair and maintenance, with a smaller positive contribution from the 0.5% growth in public housing repair and maintenance.<\/p>\n<h3>Q4 2019 compared with Q3<\/h3>\n<p>Construction output increased by 0.5% (\u00a3203m) in Q4 2019, compared with the Q3.<\/p>\n<h4>New work<\/h4>\n<p>New work rose by 0.8% (\u00a3223m) in the quarter-on-quarter series in Quarter 4 2019. The largest contributors to this increase were private commercial, which increased by 2.5% (\u00a3180m) the largest in this series since April 2017 when it rose 5.1% (\u00a3385m), and public new housing which increased by 8.4% (\u00a3137m).<\/p>\n<p>Private new housing was the largest negative contributor in new work declining by 1.1% (\u00a398m) in Q4 2019. Repair and maintenance fell by 0.1% (\u00a321m) in the quarter-on-quarter series.<\/p>\n<h4>Repair and maintenance<\/h4>\n<p>While there were increases in non-housing and public housing repair and maintenance of 1.6% (\u00a3113m) and 0.9% (\u00a316m) respectively, private housing repair and maintenance saw a fall of 2.9% (\u00a3150m).<\/p>\n<p>The ONS reported a slowdown in private housing repair and maintenance in this series since the start of 2019, with output in December 2019 10.5% lower than in February 2019<\/p>\n<h3>Industry response<\/h3>\n<p>Matthew Bench, executive director of Growth and Partnerships at <a href=\"https:\/\/ilkehomes.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ilke Homes<\/a>, said: \u201cIt seems the housebuilding industry is finally pulling its socks up and getting on with building the homes our country so desperately needs, with year-on-year increases in public and private housing achieving growths of 18% and 4% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s widely expected that the chancellor&#8217;s spring Budget will be accompanied by a new construction strategy, and if so, Mr Javid should\u00a0use this opportunity to cement the government\u2019s commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/modern-methods-of-construction-4\/63529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modern methods of construction<\/a> (MMC).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Clive Docwra, managing director of leading construction consulting and design agency <a title=\"https:\/\/mcbains.co.uk\/\" href=\"https:\/\/mcbains.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McBains<\/a>, added: &#8220;More than anything, these figures reflect an underlying resilience in the sector \u2013 given that they cover a tumultuous political period at the end of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, we\u2019re not entirely out of the woods.
