The Science and Technology Facilities Council<\/a> (STFC) has selected Mace<\/a> to deliver its Extreme Photonics Applications Centre on the Harwell campus in Oxfordshire<\/h2>\n

The Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) development is a new purpose-built building that will house a unique, state-of-the-art high power and high repetition laser system.<\/p>\n

The EPAC will help researchers and industry better understand the composition of new materials and how they behave in different conditions. It is a highly strategic, disruptive technology and directly supports the UK Government\u2019s Industrial Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mace was chosen on this project through the Southern Construction Framework (SCF).<\/p>\n

The contractor will work with the STFC, designers, a global concrete specialist and our supply chain partners to deliver the whole project, including the experimental areas of the building where high-intensity lasers will be tested.<\/p>\n

STFC\u2019s Central Laser Facility<\/h3>\n

Professor John Collier, director of the UK\u2019s Central Laser Facility, said: \u201cAs our construction partner in the EPAC project Mace will be contributing, alongside the work of the team of the scientists and engineers at STFC\u2019s Central Laser Facility and our colleagues in academia, to a project that will enable the UK to realise the potential offered by laser-driven radiation sources to be genuinely disruptive and that will soon bring together the wider science community in a diverse programme of fundamental and applied research.\u201d<\/p>\n

Terry Spraggett, managing director for public sector construction at Mace<\/a>, said: \u201cWe are delighted to be appointed to deliver EPAC, marking another step forward in our relationship with the STFC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Extreme Photonics Application Centre is a technically complex and challenging project, and we will use our experience in delivering cutting edge research facilities to realise the client\u2019s vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mace\u2019s public sector construction team has a track record in building large scale research facilities, including the Big Data Institute, part of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information, for Oxford University.<\/p>\n

Extreme Photonics Applications Centre investment<\/h3>\n

The government has announced a \u00a381m investment in the EPAC, with funding provided through the R&D-focused Strategic Priorities Fund.<\/p>\n

The appointment follows Mace\u2019s recent successful work on two other research projects for the STFC on the Harwell campus, including the National Satellite Test Facility and the Rosalind Franklin Institute.<\/p>\n
