{"id":72006,"date":"2020-02-18T14:02:19","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T14:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=72006"},"modified":"2022-09-29T10:31:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T09:31:18","slug":"smart-tech-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/smart-tech-overhaul\/72006\/","title":{"rendered":"Highway network in Sheffield gets UK\u2019s biggest smart tech overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amey.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amey<\/a>, which operates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amey.co.uk\/about-us\/amey-in-your-area\/north-east\/sheffield-streets-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Streets Ahead<\/a> is putting itself at the forefront of smart technology to deliver highway efficiency in the city of Sheffield via a platform provided by Smart City operator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connexin.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connexin<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Connexin\u2019s CityOS platform, described by the firm as the \u201cOperating System of a Smart City\u201d, is being delivered in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en_uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cisco<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantela.com\/#!\/dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quantela<\/a> and will digitally connect essential highway maintenance services and inform operatives about the condition of street assets in real-time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Using an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/iot-pollution\/62178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet of Things<\/a> (IoT) foundation for its digital strategy, Amey will use Connexin\u2019s CityOS platform to integrate, view, manage and respond to information to improve highway maintenance services and revolutionise service delivery across Sheffield, from Stocksbridge to Mosborough. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The <span class=\"s1\">highway maintenance <\/span>service will know when to:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Empty high street bins to avoid overflowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Water trees for preservation<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Refill grit bins ready for icy conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clear gullies to reduce the risk of flash flooding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another huge benefit to the system will be a reduction in air pollution, with staff making fewer journeys across the city and being able to avoid spots where air quality levels are poor, to reduce the impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Residents of Sheffield will benefit from a better quality of life with cleaner and safer living conditions and improved maintenance services which are delivered in a more efficient, sustainable manner, contributing to the city\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=2156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clean Air Strategy<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tackling climate change and improving standards<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cabinet member for environment, street scene and climate change at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheffield City Council<\/a>, Councillor Mark Jones said: &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">By investing in this new initiative, our contractors will be undertaking fewer journeys, which in turn will result in a reduction in energy consumption, pollution and congestion, while ensuring our streets are kept clean and our bins are emptied using a more efficient and effective approach.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>An e<span class=\"s1\">nvironmentally sustainable solution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">James Haluch, managing director of Transport Infrastructure at Amey says: \u201cTechnology is becoming more and more part of our everyday lives. Working with our partners in the public and private sector, we have to make radical changes to the way we deliver services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I\u2019m delighted that we\u2019re embracing Connexin\u2019s technology, which is one of the first times it\u2019s been used in a city environment, that will benefit our service delivery and help to improve local communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;It will also offer a more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/this-is-gravity-smart-campus\/70565\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">environmentally sustainable<\/a> solution to reduce our carbon footprint and maximise the use of resources, allowing us to provide a continually evolving service for Sheffield residents.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rob Bullock, chief sales officer at Connexin says: \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to be supporting Amey to deliver services in Sheffield, further demonstrating that the digital economy and innovation is thriving in the North. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur complete solution is built on the CityOS platform, bringing together the best of breed capabilities from Cisco Kinetic for Cities and the Atlantis Smart City platform from Quantela which together present the city\u2019s assets in a single aggregated view.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis project has far reaching, long term benefits that go beyond simply delivering service efficiencies.
