{"id":72216,"date":"2020-02-21T09:42:53","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T09:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=72216"},"modified":"2020-02-21T09:42:53","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T09:42:53","slug":"landmark-tower-works-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/landmark-tower-works-site\/72216\/","title":{"rendered":"Landmark Tower Works site gains planning approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeds.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leeds City Council<\/a> has granted planning at the Tower Works site to create 245 new homes on Globe Road in the South Bank area of the city centre<\/h2>\n<p>The Tower Works development, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonsurveyors.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richardson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askrealestate.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ask Real Estate Ltd<\/a> and in conjunction with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/homes-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homes England<\/a>, will bolster the availability of housing in the Leeds area.<\/p>\n<p>Once complete it will provide two new residential buildings with 1, 2 and 3-bedroom build to rent apartments and duplexes to the south of the railway station.<\/p>\n<p>As well as creating new homes, the approved plans include ground-floor commercial uses and extensive new areas of public realm which will create a pedestrian route through from the city centre to the Holbeck Urban Village neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.srm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Robert McAlpine<\/a> was appointed as lead contractor and site enabling works have already begun ahead of an immediate start on site. McAlpine is currently developing in Leeds on the adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/blp-insurance-mustard-wharf\/57759\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mustard Wharf scheme<\/a> employing skilled local workers.<\/p>\n<p>The delivery team also includes engineering firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WSP<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryderarchitecture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryder Architecture<\/a> which has designed the scheme and project managers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fgould.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QS Faithful and Gould<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Engine House at Tower Works<\/h3>\n<p>Leeds City Council is also planning to redevelop the Grade II listed Engine House at Tower Works as a post-production facility following Channel 4\u2019s move to the city.<\/p>\n<p>The original Victorian buildings, designed by Thomas Shaw, are famous for their Italianate influence which is most obvious in the three prominent towers: Verona; Giotto and Little Chimney, a much-loved element of the Leeds skyline and which will be a focal point of the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>John Hughes, managing director, Ask Real Estate, said: \u201cTower Works is in a superb location; it is one of the most distinctive sites you see as you travel into Leeds city centre.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;It has been neglected for many years and we are delighted to be able to now bring it back into active use.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The existing creative hub at Tower Works is already home to many media, tech and digital companies and the residential element will further complement the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/leeds-city-quarters\/71097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thriving community<\/a> on site.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ben Holmes, real estate director for Richardson, added: \u201cWe have been working closely with the City Council to evolve and refine the designs in recent months and are delighted that the scheme is approved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The South Bank area of the city is being totally transformed and is one of the most desirable residential locations in Leeds.
