{"id":72595,"date":"2020-02-28T11:14:25","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T11:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=72595"},"modified":"2020-02-28T11:14:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T11:14:25","slug":"end-rough-sleeping-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/end-rough-sleeping-2\/72595\/","title":{"rendered":"Government invests \u00a3236m to end rough sleeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/ministers\/prime-minister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prime Minister<\/a> has announced an extra \u00a3236m to help get people off the streets, the funding will go towards offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeless.org.uk\/our-work\/national-projects\/housing-first-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Housing First<\/a> style accommodation for up to 6,000 rough sleepers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Boris Johnson has appointed an independent adviser to lead an urgent review into the causes of rough sleeping. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/louise-casey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dame Louise Casey<\/a> has been appointed to undertake a review into rough sleeping that will provide the government with advice on additional action required to end rough sleeping within this Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">Dame Casey&#8217;s role<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dame Casey will provide the government with advice on what is needed to end rough sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new funding will bring suitable housing forward by acquiring new units, refurbishing existing accommodation units, and leasing private rented sector properties specifically for those who are at risk of or are rough sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dame Louise will report to the Prime Minister and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/ministers\/secretary-of-state-for-housing-communities-and-local-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">secretary of state for housing, communities and local government<\/a>. She will consider as part of the urgent review the links between 24-hour street activity and rough sleeping and how best we can support this group. It will also look into those struggling with drug and alcohol misuse, and those with physical and mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Funding<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The government has already committed \u00a3437m to tackle homelessness in 2020\/21. This includes more than \u00a3112m last year to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/protect-low-income-families\/63485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fund services<\/a> for people sleeping rough through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/rough-sleeping-initiative-2020-to-2021-funding-allocations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rough Sleeping Initiative<\/a>. This\u202ffunding will be used by councils to\u202fprovide\u202fup to 6,000 beds and 2,500 staff over the next year.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This new action also forms part of a wider strategy to tackle all forms of homelessness. The government is already investing \u00a31.2bn to tackle homelessness, and introduced ambitious new legislation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeless.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/site-attachments\/Implementing%20the%20Homelessness%20Reduction%20Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homelessness Reduction Act<\/a> to ensure people at risk of becoming homeless get help more quickly, with councils receiving funding to support them in these duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">A moral obligation to support the most vulnerable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Adam Holloway MP will also be appointed as parliamentary private secretary to Robert Jenrick with specific responsibility for rough sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Boris Johnson, said: \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve announced extra funding to help thousands more people get off the streets, and I have appointed Dame Louise Casey as an adviser to undertake an urgent review into the causes of rough sleeping and provide expert advice on vital next steps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Housing secretary Robert Jenrick, commented: \u201cI\u2019m determined that we end rough sleeping in this Parliament, meeting our moral obligation to support the most vulnerable in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe will be bringing together housing, addiction, mental health and the criminal justice system as never before to tackle this social ill from every angle. The coordinated effort that we will now pursue, beginning with this review, builds on the progress we have made in recent years, reducing the number of people sleeping on the streets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dame Louise Casey added: \u201cI am pleased to accept this commission from the Prime Minister and the Housing Secretary.
