{"id":72813,"date":"2020-03-05T12:08:05","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T12:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=72813"},"modified":"2020-03-09T07:24:57","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T07:24:57","slug":"kier-top-out-at-uks-first-passivhaus-care-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/kier-top-out-at-uks-first-passivhaus-care-home\/72813\/","title":{"rendered":"Kier tops out at UK\u2019s first passivhaus care home"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The main structure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/passivhaustrust.org.uk\/news\/detail\/?nId=621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St Loyes extra care home scheme<\/a> is now complete for the \u00a39.8m development that will be the first passivhaus standard care home in the country<\/h2>\n<p>The passivhaus care home is set to open in autumn this year and the building\u2019s internal environment will provide unique heat, air and water features for optimum comfort as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/new-passivhaus-school\/66050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being energy efficient<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Topping out of the main structure is an important milestone for St Loyes extra care home scheme that is set to provide comfortable living space with low energy costs for its residents when it opens and provide longevity as the building will adapt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/climate-experts-help-construction-prepare-for-unpredictable-weather\/72493\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">predicted weather conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kier was joined by councillors from <a href=\"https:\/\/exeter.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exeter City Council<\/a> to celebrate topping out at St Loyes extra care home scheme.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Exeter Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/energyandclimatechange\/strategy\/climate-change-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate strategy<\/a>, and utilising Exeter University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emps.exeter.ac.uk\/engineering\/research\/cee\/research\/prometheus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PROMETHEUS<\/a>\u00a0weather data up to 2080, the new passivhaus care home will adapt to changing weather climates \u2013 from rising temperatures to storms.<\/p>\n<h3>St Loyes extra care home scheme<\/h3>\n<p>Situated off Topsham Road in Exeter, the St Loyes extra care home scheme will comprise of 53 apartments that have been carefully designed to meet the needs of its residents, the elderly and those requiring dementia care.<\/p>\n<p>Across the 5-storey building, there will also be lounges, dining rooms, hobby spaces including a library, as well as a salon and spa treatment room. Surrounding the building will be landscaped gardens<\/p>\n<h3>Giving the opportunity to receive care while remaining independent<\/h3>\n<p>Doug Lloyd, operations director at Kier Regional Building Western &amp; Wales, states: \u201cWe are extremely proud to be working with Exeter City Council to build the UK\u2019s first passivhaus standard care home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with our local supply chain, we will spend the coming months completing the building ready for opening in autumn.
