A site that was supposed to host the world\u2019s most sustainable residential tower, in Hemel Hempstead, has been taken over by developer Southern Grove<\/a> who will develop 170 affordable homes<\/h2>\n

ECE Architecture<\/a> will be designing the affordable housing development and a planning application is expected to be submitted to Dacorum Borough Council<\/a> this summer. PwC<\/a> has been acting for the receivers and the sale of the site was handled by Allsop.<\/p>\n

The echo-scheme<\/h3>\n

Eco-development, The Beacon, in Hemel Hempstead, Herts, first made\u00a0headlines\u00a0when it was announced in 2015 and was due to be completed in 2018.<\/p>\n

It was later remodelled and renamed \u2018Boxmoor Forest\u2019 to please planners by developer Lumiere Developments. However, the construction never got underway and ultimately the debt held against the project was called in by its bridging lender.<\/p>\n

170 affordable homes<\/h3>\n

The site was advertised by the receiver at \u00a38.5m and Southern Grove exchanged contracts on the land last week. The company \u2014 which specialises in delivering affordable housing<\/a> schemes in areas of high-demand \u2014 will now partner with a housing association to provide\u00a0170\u00a0homes in a fully affordable scheme.<\/p>\n

The site in Whiteleaf Road is just a 10-minute walk from Hemel Hempstead train station which gets commuters to London Euston in around 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

Tom Slingsby, CEO of developer Southern Grove, commented: \u201cHemel Hempstead desperately needs more affordable homes and we\u2019re proud to be tabling the latest in a series of projects for fully affordable schemes right where people need them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great news for the people of Hemel Hempstead that development of this site will now make progress.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the units will be available at affordable rent or for purchase with shared ownership, and we remain determined to raise the quality of the finish that residents can expect from homes available through these initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n
