{"id":72982,"date":"2020-03-10T09:42:33","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T09:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=72982"},"modified":"2020-03-10T09:42:33","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T09:42:33","slug":"female-electrical-apprenticeships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/female-electrical-apprenticeships\/72982\/","title":{"rendered":"Female electrical apprenticeships on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A group of industry bodies have welcomed the rise in female electrical apprenticeships, but say more should be done to encourage other young women into the industry<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjib.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Joint Industry Board<\/a> (SJIB), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sectt.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust<\/a> (SECTT), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.select.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SELECT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unite the Union<\/a> hailed recent figures which showed that 13 female electrical apprenticeships are currently training to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/self-employed-electricians\/66919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electricians<\/a> in 2019-2020, compared to seven in 2018-2019.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in female electrical apprenticeships overall in 2019\/2020 saw 70% of those applying being taken on to the Electrical Installation Modern Apprenticeship.<\/p>\n<p>Fiona Harper, secretary of the SJIB and director of employment and skills at SELECT, commented: \u201cIn the month that we celebrated both Scottish Apprenticeship Week and International Women\u2019s Day, it\u2019s heartening to see more young women than ever taking up electrical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/support-for-skills\/72269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apprenticeships in Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also heartening to see that all these women are there on merit. Like all apprentices, they were required to pass an assessment before they were accepted onto the apprenticeship programme, and each demonstrated the aptitude and competence to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is clearly a growing realisation among young women that being an electrical professional is a viable career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rise of renewables and the next generation of electrical technology is making our industry more attractive to would-be electricians of both genders, so it is now up to all of us to tap into this enthusiasm and ensure we keep a pipeline of talent \u2013 both male and female \u2013 coming through.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Encouraging upward trend<\/h3>\n<p>Anne Galbraith, CEO of SECTT, added: \u201cThese figures, although modest, are extremely encouraging and show a definite upward trend in women wanting to become electricians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a testament to the hard work of the SJIB and SECTT that these young women are now succeeding in their apprenticeships and are working side-by-side with their male counterparts. Female apprentices always do extremely well both on site and at college and are respected by their colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past 30 years we have helped 20,000 apprentices realise their potential. Today we have 3,000 electrical modern apprentices, work closely with 22 approved training centres and enjoy 800 employer partnerships. However, there needs to be a concerted effort to attract even more women to take up this extremely rewarding career.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Untapped female talent<\/h3>\n<p>Unite the Union claimed that the Scottish Government should be doing more to encourage young women to take up electrical apprenticeships.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Foley, regional officer for Unite, said: \u201cSeeing the rise in female apprentices is encouraging \u2013 but just think what could be achieved if Holyrood encouraged our young women to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that there is an untapped seam of female talent out there \u2013 what we need is a concerted government campaigns and programme of investment to inspire them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foley, added: \u201cIf the Scottish Government was to actually help encourage more young women to become electrical apprentices, the benefits would be two-fold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirstly, we would help to address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/action-tackle-skills-shortages\/51575\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skills shortage<\/a> that currently affects the sector.
