{"id":73346,"date":"2020-03-16T14:05:15","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T14:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=73346"},"modified":"2020-03-18T09:16:08","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T09:16:08","slug":"coronavirus-construction-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/coronavirus-construction-industry\/73346\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus&#8217; impact on the construction industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Build UK\u00a0and\u00a0CECA take action to support its members amid the coronavirus or COVID-19 impact on the construction industry<\/h2>\n<p>The coronavirus or COVID-19 has accelerated over the weekend and, along with other sectors such as travel and hospitality, construction will be dramatically and severely affected.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst the priority last week was to keep business-critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/coronavirus-construction-contracts\/71651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction projects<\/a> open and operational wherever possible, that is likely to change in the weeks ahead. If the government decides to put the country into &#8216;lockdown&#8217; due to coronavirus, decisions will be taken out of the hands of individual companies and sites may have to close.<\/p>\n<p>The impact on the industry&#8217;s supply chain, consisting of multiple layers of businesses, many of them of SME&#8217;s with a significant amount of self-employed workers, will be catastrophic and unavoidable.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/builduk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Build UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceca.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CECA<\/a> members are already taking action:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing welfare and hygiene facilities and protecting the workforce.<\/li>\n<li>Liaising with clients on contingency arrangements.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing contractual arrangements to understand options now and in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Liaising with funders and banks to secure sufficient credit.<\/li>\n<li>Contacting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/hm-revenue-customs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HMRC<\/a> on 0800 0159 559 to discuss arrangements for delaying payment of taxes.<\/li>\n<li>Setting up project-specific communication networks with their supply chains.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing safety-critical elements of their projects.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing programmes.<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring remote access is in place.<\/li>\n<li>Offering those with the ability to work from home to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Protecting business-critical functions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/coronavirus-sick-pay\/72960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">payroll and accounts<\/a> departments.<\/li>\n<li>Splitting teams to avoid everyone becoming ill at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>Reducing contact between leadership teams.<\/li>\n<li>Cancelling or moving meetings and overseas travel to conference calls or online meetings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know that this is much more difficult for on-site construction roles including manufacturing facilities which will be directly affected by any restriction on movements. Many individuals are also concerned about their financial situation; the future of their business, their employer and their job. Communication at this time is key.<\/p>\n<h3>Over the next few days Build UK and CECA will be:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/brexit-commercial-contracts\/70798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Force Majeure<\/a> and other contractual clauses for the whole supply chain.<\/li>\n<li>Calling on the public sector to provide clarity on each of its construction contracts.
