93% of engineering services businesses say they are \u2018concerned or very concerned\u2019 about the impact of coronavirus on their business over the next six months, according to a major new ECA,<\/a> BESA<\/a> and SELECT<\/a> engineering services survey<\/h2>\n

The survey, which is still live, has already received over 600 responses from across the industry, including nearly 180 from larger businesses in the sector. The coronavirus situation is fast-moving and further survey responses are expected to show an increasing impact on the industry<\/a> in the days ahead.<\/p>\n

Initial responses<\/h3>\n

Over 60% of respondents are \u2018very concerned\u2019 about coronavirus while perhaps remarkably, one per cent of respondents suggested they were \u2018unconcerned\u2019.<\/p>\n

51% of the engineering services respondents said that they have already encountered \u2018delays and disruptions to current projects\u2019, with 61% of larger businesses reporting current disruption.<\/p>\n

Around half of the respondents already report \u2018delays and disruption to future work\u2019. Over half of the respondents 53% said they were now \u2018preparing business contingency plans\u2019 as a result of developments, a figure which rose to 71% in larger businesses.<\/p>\n

The most commonly cited business activity in response to coronavirus to date is \u2018reducing business travel\u2019 and \u2018asking or allowing staff to work from home\u2019, followed by \u2018business contingency planning.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, around 10% of businesses say they have \u2018shut down at certain premises or sites\u2019, and over 10% of respondents also say they are \u2018updating their contracts\u2019 and \u2018looking into alternative suppliers\u2019.<\/p>\n

Engineering services plays a critical role in developing and maintaining the UK\u2019s built environment, which includes businesses, housing, hospitals and care homes, and the UK\u2019s wider infrastructure, and is fundamental to employment and keeping the UK economy moving.<\/p>\n

ECA, BESA and SELECT responds<\/h3>\n

ECA CEO, Steve Bratt commented: \u201cCoronavirus is already having a significant impact across our industry and wider society. ECA is aware that many businesses are already encountering work delays, site access issues and cancellations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are actively working with industry bodies and government to represent the concerns and interests of the industry. Key to this is ensuring that government understands that early, significant and practically useful support is needed to help our industry with cash flow, but also to provide as much certainty as possible.”<\/p>\n

BESA director of legal and commercial, Debbie Petford said: \u201cThough these are just preliminary findings, the sheer scale of the disruption to the sector is alarming.<\/p>\n

“We will be working around the clock to provide as much guidance as possible to our members, and calling on the government to keep providing additional stimulus and support as the situation evolves, to ensure businesses make it to other side of this crisis in one piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

SELECT managing director, Alan Wilson, commented: This is clearly an extremely worrying time for SELECT Members and the wider industry. Each day brings fresh concerns, with the threat of shutdown still looming large.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike ECA and BESA, we are taking proactive measures to help electrical professionals address their concerns at this unprecedented moment in history. The knock-on effects of this pandemic could be catastrophic for the industry, particularly when it comes to payments, so it\u2019s essential that vital cash flow continues.\u201d<\/p>\n
