{"id":73828,"date":"2020-03-25T10:32:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T10:32:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=73828"},"modified":"2020-03-25T10:32:53","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T10:32:53","slug":"builders-merchants-stay-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/builders-merchants-stay-open\/73828\/","title":{"rendered":"Government advises builders merchants to stay open"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Builders merchants have been told they are a vital part of the construction supply chain and that they need to stay open during the coronavirus crisis<\/h2>\n<p>During yesterday\u2019s (24 March) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Leadership Council<\/a> Taskforce briefing with BEIS, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmf.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Builders Merchants Federation<\/a> (BMF) received clarification on builders merchants operational status following the stay at home restrictions announced by the government.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting confirmed that merchants are a vital part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/how-to-handle-disruptions-to-the-supply-chain\/41853\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction supply chain<\/a> and that it is important that they continue to support the construction industry to operate on sites.<\/p>\n<p>It also outlined that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/builders-merchants-covid-19\/73747\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">builders merchants<\/a> should continue to provide the link between product manufacturers and the firms and tradespeople that use and install the products they make.<\/p>\n<p>However, all operations should be carried out whilst observing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/public-health-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Health England<\/a> (PHE) Guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>BMF CEO, John Newcomb said: \u201cThe advice we received from BEIS following this morning\u2019s briefing call makes it clear that merchants should continue to operate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdeally, this should be through online and delivery services, but those who need to maintain depot service are able to do so providing they observe PHE guidance including social distancing, cleaning and hygiene, staff welfare and all other means to minimise the risks of transmitting coronavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>To ensure they can continue to operate BMF is advising members that:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Builders merchants should continue to operate and to provide a key service to their customers, but do this taking account of the guidance provided by Public Health England;<\/li>\n<li>Online and delivery services can operate as normal, although drivers should seek to follow advice on social distancing, and avoid close contact with customers;<\/li>\n<li>Where firms operate stores, they should consider how to manage ordering and collection systems and store operations to observe PHE guidance including social distancing, and on cleaning and hygiene, including of staff welfare facilities, to minimise the risks of transmitting coronavirus;
