The construction industry should donate their personal protective equipment to local healthcare communities, says the Chartered Institute of Building<\/a>\u00a0(CIOB)<\/h2>\n

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is calling on the construction industry to donate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to their local healthcare communities amid international shortages for healthcare professionals in the fight against coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that healthcare workers providing treatment to COVID-19 patients wear a medical mask, gown, gloves and eye protection, but there is an international shortage of PPE, particularly masks and respirators.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0UK\u00a0government has\u00a0already\u00a0appealed to\u00a0the\u00a0automotive\u00a0industry to divert resources and begin manufacturing respirators,\u00a0while in Europe, luxury goods firms have begun\u00a0producing surgical masks. In the US, contractors\u00a0are beginning to\u00a0donate\u00a0respiratory masks, with professions such as dentistry\u00a0also donating supplies.<\/p>\n

Caroline Gumble, CEO of the CIOB,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cAs\u00a0some\u00a0construction sites temporarily close<\/a> their doors around the\u00a0world\u00a0and adapt the way that they\u2019re working,\u00a0many items of\u00a0personal protective equipment\u00a0are\u00a0becoming available.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith\u00a0healthcare providers\u00a0experiencing\u00a0an international\u00a0shortage in such crucial times, this is an\u00a0opportunity for the industry to step up and do their part.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that many CIOB members are already doing this and that, as a community, they are\u00a0always willing to collaborate, act responsibility and support their wider communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The CIOB has been working closely with many other industry bodies, including the Construction Leadership Council<\/a> and Build UK<\/a>, to offer advice during the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n
