Police forces across the\u00a0UK\u00a0are taking extra patrols in emp\u00adty city and town cen\u00adtres, as bur\u00adglars tar\u00adget shops, pubs and construction sites dur\u00ading the coro\u00adn\u00adavirus lockdown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gathering intel\u00adli\u00adgence data from police reports, news items, and their own cus\u00adtomer feed\u00adback, the prop\u00ader\u00adty secu\u00adri\u00adty spe\u00adcial\u00adists,\u00a0VPS\u00a0UK<\/a>, has seen a\u00a0sud\u00adden rise in bur\u00adglar\u00adies and attempt\u00aded thefts in Man\u00adches\u00adter, Mersey\u00adside, Gwent and Cleveland.<\/p>\n

Oppor\u00adtunis\u00adtic thieves<\/h3>\n

David Wormald, key account direc\u00adtor for hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty\u00a0&\u00a0retail at\u00a0VPS, said: \u201cIt\u2019s no sur\u00adprise that when whole city cen\u00adtres are desert\u00aded, that oppor\u00adtunis\u00adtic thieves will take their chances, espe\u00adcial\u00adly with an already stretched police ser\u00advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd because so many peo\u00adple are stay\u00ading at home now, there\u2019s even few\u00ader chances that an attempt\u00aded bur\u00adglary on a\u00a0com\u00admer\u00adcial site will be spot\u00adted and reported.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week the British Secu\u00adri\u00adty Indus\u00adtry Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion<\/a> con\u00adfirmed that the cur\u00adrent def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of key crit\u00adi\u00adcal work\u00aders includes reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded secu\u00adri\u00adty pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals.<\/p>\n

Roles essen\u00adtial to sup\u00adport\u00ading law and order, with the poten\u00adtial to reduce demand on polic\u00ading, also meet the crit\u00adi\u00adcal work\u00ader def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion. This includes the guard\u00ading and\u00a0CCTV\u00a0mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading of emp\u00adty or closed com\u00admer\u00adcial, retail or office premis\u00ades, and the pro\u00advi\u00adsion of alarm response cen\u00adtres includ\u00ading mobile units.<\/p>\n

Vulnerable construction sites<\/h3>\n

Wormald added: \u201cEven though it is a\u00a0des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded key work\u00ader<\/a> sec\u00adtor, the secu\u00adri\u00adty indus\u00adtry also has to place a\u00a0pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adty of care for its work\u00aders dur\u00ading the virus cri\u00adsis. Inevitably we will have some oper\u00ada\u00adtional strains if more staff are required to self-iso\u00adlate.<\/p>\n

\u200b\u201cBut we are more for\u00adtu\u00adnate than oth\u00aders in being able to deploy both guards and\/\u200bor\u00a0CCTV\u00a0secu\u00adri\u00adty sys\u00adtems, because the lat\u00adter is a\u00a0safe, social\u00adly dis\u00adtant means to mon\u00adi\u00adtor premis\u00ades via a\u00a0remote video mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading cen\u00adtre.<\/p>\n

\u201cVul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble premis\u00ades like con\u00adstruc\u00adtion sites, which con\u00adtain valu\u00adable plant and equip\u00adment, are now stand\u00ading emp\u00adty for a\u00a0few weeks, so they need to be kept secure.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded: \u201cNo two sites are ever the same, and when the March\u00a0UK\u00a0crime sta\u00adtis\u00adtics are pub\u00adlished soon, it would be worth check\u00ading to see if one area has wit\u00adnessed a\u00a0greater rise in crim\u00adi\u00adnal activ\u00adi\u00adty on com\u00admer\u00adcial premis\u00ades than anoth\u00ader.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be one indi\u00adca\u00adtion of greater vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for shops and pubs, for exam\u00adple, and may high\u00adlight where addi\u00adtion\u00adal secu\u00adri\u00adty mea\u00adsures might be need\u00aded.\u201d<\/p>\n
