{"id":75029,"date":"2020-04-20T09:25:26","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=75029"},"modified":"2020-04-20T09:25:26","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:25:26","slug":"pooley-bridge-construction-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/pooley-bridge-construction-work\/75029\/","title":{"rendered":"Cumbria County Council resumes Pooley Bridge construction work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cumbria.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cumbria County Council<\/a>\u2019s replacement bridge project at Pooley Bridge is set to resume today (20 April), following a review of the authority\u2019s construction schemes in response to the coronavirus outbreak<\/h2>\n<p>Works on the Pooley Bridge scheme were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-sites-close-down\/73765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">temporarily suspended<\/a> on 27 March to support social distancing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The construction industry has since received direction on this issue from the Government, which has confirmed work at construction sites can continue provided enhanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/covid-19-site-procedures\/73750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">operating procedures<\/a> are in place.<\/p>\n<p>In light of this guidance, the county council has reviewed a number of key strategic construction sites to identify if works can resume safely in line with the new procedures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/public-health-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Health England<\/a> guidance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericwright.co.uk\/divisions\/civil-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Wright Civil Engineering<\/a> (EWCE), the main contractor on the Pooley Bridge project, has confirmed they can resume works on the replacement bridge following guidance from the Construction Leadership Council.<\/p>\n<h3>Challenging times for UK economy<\/h3>\n<p>Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic is both a health and economic crisis. We are working with our main contractors to support local economic activity where it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clear guidance from government means that some projects like the new Pooley Bridge project, can safely resume with necessary measures put in place by EWCE to protect the workforce and community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are truly exceptional circumstances and we will be closely monitoring all construction activity to ensure government guidance is strictly followed.
