{"id":75079,"date":"2020-04-21T08:58:40","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T07:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=75079"},"modified":"2020-04-21T08:58:40","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T07:58:40","slug":"construction-sites-stagger-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-sites-stagger-opening\/75079\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction sites must stagger opening times, urges Unite"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>As construction sites across London begin to open, <a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unite<\/a> has urged sites to stagger their opening times to avoid congestion and the spread of coronavirus on bus and transport system<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aslef.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASLEF<\/a> and Unite the Union said that without firm action by construction companies safety measures to stop the spread of the disease on public transport, including the implementation of the central door, only loading secured by Unite, risk being undone.<\/p>\n<p>A call was also issued to <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transport for London<\/a> (TfL) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mayor of London Sadiq Khan<\/a> to help ensure construction employers comply with the unions\u2019 demands.<\/p>\n<p>The unions made clear that both bus workers and construction workers need maximum protection from COVID-19 and called on TfL, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/public-health-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Health England<\/a> and bus and construction employers to ensure they are safe.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 transport workers in London have died from coronavirus, with the majority of victims working as bus drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Unite secretary for the London and Eastern region, Pete Kavanagh, said: &#8220;It is imperative that construction firms stagger workers\u2019 start and finish times.\u00a0This should be happening on every site and employers should be liaising with each other, but also with oversight from industry federations, to make sure these times are different<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unless that happens the progress made in recent days on the central door only loading and other measures will be undone. We will see unnecessarily large groups of people boarding the same transport because they are starting work at the same time. Even now our members report that too many people are getting on some buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you do have to use public transport please take extra care \u2013 it is no exaggeration to say that our bus drivers\u2019 lives depend on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A clear plan to stagger working times<\/h3>\n<p>Unite national officer for construction, Jerry Swain, said: &#8220;We call on TfL and Sadiq Khan to work with Unite, construction companies and their federations, to outline a clear plan to stagger working times and to get workers safely to site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk is not limited to the journey to and from work either. Public Health England\u2019s guidance that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/coronavirus-job-retention-scheme-3\/75052\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction workers<\/a> can work in close proximity for up to 15 minutes is not fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Construction workers are just as vulnerable as everyone else and need to be protected. Unite will not rest until employers and politicians make this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers\u2019 trade union, added: \u201cAll journeys should be staggered for the protection of those travelling and those providing the transport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We fully support the call by Unite for construction sites to stagger their operating times to even out the peaks and create real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/highways-workers-social-distancing\/74561\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social distancing<\/a>.
