{"id":75554,"date":"2020-04-29T14:24:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T13:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=75554"},"modified":"2020-04-29T14:24:37","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T13:24:37","slug":"bvlos-drone-inspection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/bvlos-drone-inspection\/75554\/","title":{"rendered":"Success for first UK \u2018beyond visual line of sight\u2019 drone inspection"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>AmeyVTOL, the joint venture between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amey.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amey<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vtol-technologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VTOL technologies<\/a>, has successfully trialled the first drone inspection of UK infrastructure to go beyond visual line of sight (BVLoS)<\/h2>\n<p>During the drone inspection demonstration, the VTOL flying wing surveyed an area of 2km autonomously and out of the sight of the pilot.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to\u00a0this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/harnessing-drone-technology-to-inform-planning-and-maintenance\/64866\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drone inspections<\/a> were limited to flight within visual line of sight (WVLoS) and as such, could not go further than 500 metres from the pilot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"3GLEi6lFci8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AmeyVTOL 1\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3GLEi6lFci8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3>Benefits of BVLoS<\/h3>\n<p>The successful trial\u00a0opens up\u00a0significant possibilities for\u00a0BVLoS\u00a0inspections of long linear infrastructure such as roads, railways and overhead power lines.<\/p>\n<p>BVLoS\u00a0saves time and reduces inspection and survey costs. It also increases the quality, volume, and repeatability of data \u2013 enabling better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/asset-management-built-environment\/62094\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asset management<\/a> decisions and more efficient maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, it also allows drone inspections and surveys to be undertaken without people needing to work alongside a live railway, removing \u2018boots from ballast\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The success was made possible through\u00a0AmeyVTOL\u2019s\u00a0innovative VTOL Flying Wing which can fly up to 100km on a single charge due to a unique hybrid design and an optimised energy system.<\/p>\n<p>Preparation and execution of the trial was made possible through\u00a0AmeyVTOL\u2019s operational control centre which enables the planning, simulation, and remote monitoring of\u00a0BVLoS\u00a0drone operations.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced communications and simulation capabilities were developed in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsaerospace.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Collins Aerospace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018More effective inspections\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Alex Gilbert, managing director at Amey Consulting, said: \u201cWe are delighted to have successfully trialled a UK first for asset management.
