noreferrer\">Construction Leadership Council<\/a> (CLC) has revealed that only 12% of applications for Government-backed loan schemes have been approved to help construction businesses<\/h2>\n<p>The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has researched the impact of the Government-backed loan schemes, with the support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institution of Civil Engineers<\/a> (ICE).<\/p>\n<p>Research also revealed that 30% of construction businesses had their application refused, while 58% were still awaiting a decision.<\/p>\n<h3>Reasons for applying for a loan included:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>40% for a short-term facility to aid cash flow<\/li>\n<li>48% for up to two years funding to cover costs of disruption<\/li>\n<li>12% for a longer-term source of funding to help rebuild finances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CLC has called for a streamlined loan process to ensure construction businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/managing-cash-flow-covid19\/75371\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">facing financial pressure<\/a> get the support they need.<\/p>\n<h3>Recommendations from the CLC include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The need for guidance to support firms in making a loan application, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaew.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales<\/a> (ICAEW) has published a helpful checklist<\/li>\n<li>Clearer information should be provided by the banks on the rates offered for the products available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>A prioritisation system for processing applications according to the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Essential to business survival<\/li>\n<li>Companies delivering projects supporting public services<\/li>\n<li>The introduction of flexibility for payback periods and rolling credit facilities<\/li>\n<li>The removal of early repayment charges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CLC warned that SMEs are facing extreme pressure as they lack the resources required for the current application process.<\/p>\n<p>It said that while some SMEs would benefit from the Bounce Back Loan scheme, other construction businesses would be looking for support above its \u00a350,000 threshold.<\/p>\n<p>The CLC has urged government to guarantee 100% of loans under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-smes-coronavirus\/74251\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme<\/a> (CBILS), to relieve pressure on banks.<\/p>\n<h3>A streamlined process<\/h3>\n<p>Joint chair of the CLC, Andy Mitchell, said: \u201cThe government has done an astonishing job putting in place ground-breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/self-employed-income-support-scheme\/73946\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial support<\/a> to UK businesses in very short order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan, Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme and Covid-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/coronavirus-business-support\/73691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corporate Financing Facility<\/a> are a shot in the arm for our sector and UK plc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to help make sure this vital support makes its way into the industry, providing short-term liquidity as companies get back to work after the covid-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to work with the government and lenders to make sure this happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Vickers, chief executive at the Association for Consultancy and Engineering, added: \u201cWe looked at Germany which has a single streamlined process only doing its own checks on loans above \u20ac3m and on a fast-tracked self-certificated basis for loans below \u20ac10m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy moving towards a similar model in the UK we can save many vulnerable businesses in our sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
