{"id":75853,"date":"2020-05-05T13:03:16","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T12:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=75853"},"modified":"2020-05-05T13:03:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T12:03:16","slug":"project-professionals-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/project-professionals-construction\/75853\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction project managers anticipate disruptions as firms reopen"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Nearly half of project professionals say construction projects have been delayed as a result of coronavirus, as fears grow for future disruptions, according to a survey by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association for Project Management<\/a> (APM)<\/h2>\n<p>As the UK prepares to reopen for business, the vast majority of project professionals fear future disruption to their projects as a result of coronavirus, according to the new survey.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of an expected announcement from the government this week of measures aimed at restarting the economy, APM has advised on steps that organisations can take to establish a \u2018new normal\u2019 that will ensure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-projects-covid-19\/75172\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction projects<\/a> resume safely and in adherence with government guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>These measures include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/site-operating-procedures\/74832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social distancing<\/a>, flexible working, alternative methods of communication, and reviewing budgets and priorities to focus on the most essential work.<\/p>\n<h3>Survey findings<\/h3>\n<p>A survey of project professionals, carried out for APM by research company <a href=\"https:\/\/censuswide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Censuswide<\/a>, discovered that 77% of respondents anticipate future disruption to projects they are working on as a result of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Only 14% say their main project has not been affected by the pandemic. The most commonly cited impacts of the outbreak are that it has caused a project to be delayed (44%) and that it has required a project\u2019s goals to be reviewed (28%).<\/p>\n<p>Project professionals will be at\u00a0the forefront of planning and delivering successful change in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-supply-chain\/75785\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-lockdown<\/a> world. They will need to adopt new ways of working to successfully deliver and manage projects amidst the seismic disruption caused by coronavirus.<\/p>\n<h4>Key findings from the survey, which surveyed 1,000 project professionals from across industry sectors, include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>44% of respondents say coronavirus has led to their main project being delayed<\/li>\n<li>29% of respondents say the pandemic has caused project goals to be reviewed<\/li>\n<li>26% of respondents say the pandemic has caused deadlines to be missed<\/li>\n<li>17% of respondents say the pandemic has led to project budgets being cut<\/li>\n<li>77% of respondents anticipate further disruption to projects they are working on as a result of coronavirus outbreak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Remobilise projects safely<\/h3>\n<p>APM is urging that the restarting of projects, across all industry sectors, takes place in a managed and controlled manner that adhered to the latest government guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Project director and APM chair John McGlynn, said: \u201cThe appetite for businesses to get going again is massive, but remobilising projects is going to require considerable thought and planning as we move to a new normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany factors impacting projects will need to be considered such as a social distancing measures, staggered start and finish times, adjusted budgets, compressed timelines and a reassessment of the benefits the project is delivering in this new normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that those leading on projects are in a position to adapt to change, with the right skills in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Thomson, APM\u2019s head of external affairs, added: \u201cThe coronavirus outbreak has led to new ways of working \u2013 more agile, collaborative and using by necessity remote working.
