{"id":75910,"date":"2020-05-06T13:29:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T12:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=75910"},"modified":"2020-05-06T13:29:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T12:29:00","slug":"building-safety-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/building-safety-work\/75910\/","title":{"rendered":"Councils pledge to resume unsafe cladding removal during Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Leaders from 25 councils across the UK have pledged to ensure vital building safety work, including the removal of unsafe cladding on high-rise buildings, continues in the face of Covid-19<\/h2>\n<p>The leaders from 25 councils have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/coronavirus-covid-19-pledge-to-ensure-necessary-building-safety-improvements-can-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pledged their commitment<\/a>\u00a0to ensuring vital building safety work continues where this can be done safely and in line with public health guidance, building safety minister Lord Greenhalgh has announced.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the pledge has been signed by 26 councils and five regional mayors.<\/p>\n<p>It sets out a commitment to improving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/unsafe-cladding-replacement\/74981\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safety of residential blocks<\/a> while ensuring those working on site are given clear information and support to guarantee their own safety and limit the spread of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>The new signatories to the building safety pledge include representatives of 18 London councils, as well as leaders in Manchester, Slough, Leeds, Sheffield, Salford and Liverpool.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Biggest change in safety\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Lord Greenhalgh said: \u201cWe are bringing about the biggest change in building safety in a generation backed by our unprecedented \u00a31bn fund for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cladding-high-rise-buildings\/74963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">removing unsafe cladding<\/a> from high-rise buildings, in addition to the \u00a3600m already made available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to ensure the safety of residents, building safety work must resume where it can be done safely and in line with public health guidance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement reached with local leaders from across the country is an important step that demonstrates a shared commitment to ensuring this vital work continues during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Biggs, executive mayor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.towerhamlets.gov.uk\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tower Hamlets<\/a>, added: \u201cAs a borough with more high-rise buildings than almost anywhere else in the UK, we know how important the issue of fire safety is to our residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost 3 years on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/grenfell-tower-insurance-crisis\/69450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grenfell Tower tragedy<\/a>, delays and inaction on the part of private property owners means there are still too many people forced to go to sleep at night not knowing if they are safe in their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is right that we are focusing as many resources as possible on our coronavirus response, but where work can continue safely, it is also essential that we continue to make progress on vital fire safety work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to support this vital building safety work, the MHCLG appointed a firm of construction consultants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fgould.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faithful &amp;
