\"Construction<\/a><\/h2>\n

Construction workers at Manchester Airport have been ‘left high\u00a0and dry,\u00a0without pay’ during the Covid-19 pandemic, as Unite<\/a> calls on the airport to ensure the workers\u00a0get\u00a0financial support<\/h2>\n

According to Unite, construction company\u00a0JCK and the Manchester Airport\u00a0have left construction workers with little, to no support.<\/p>\n

Greater Manchester’s\u00a0ten\u00a0councils, which have a 64.5% stake in the airport, are providing a \u00a3250m package to support Manchester Airport but have so far failed to intervene on behalf of the struggling workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unite is urging Manchester Airport Group<\/a> (MAG) to use its influence to\u00a0ensure the 70\u00a0skilled\u00a0construction workers\u00a0get\u00a0financial support.<\/p>\n

The union has also approached the Greater Manchester Councils, but the stakeholders haved abdicated responsibility for the workers. The only investor to have expressed any concern for the welfare of the workers is IFM, an Australian investment fund.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0construction of the Terminal 2 baggage handling system by Vanderlande\u00a0was\u00a0shut for\u00a0safety reasons linked to the coronavirus\u00a0in\u00a0late March. However, the mechanical engineers’ and\u00a0skilled electricians’ precarious employment status means they are unable to access the\u00a0government’s\u00a0Covid-19<\/a> schemes and\u00a0face genuine\u00a0hardship.<\/p>\n

\u2018A culture of fear\u2019<\/h3>\n

Unite has revealed that one worker was even dismissed from his job on the site after raising an issue related to Covid-19. His manager issued an angry WhatsApp message swearing and threatening the worker. Workers allege his treatment has created a culture of fear on the site leaving workers frightened to raise legitimate concerns.<\/p>\n

Unite regional coordinating\u00a0officer Andy Fisher, said:\u00a0“Dozens of skilled construction workers<\/a> were left high and dry, without pay. Workers allege they\u00a0have been threatened and abused and one was even\u00a0sacked for raising concerns about Covid-19.<\/p>\n

“It’s clear there is money available and it’s\u00a0disgraceful that Manchester Airport, its\u00a0council stakeholders\u00a0and the contractors let these workers fall into hardship.<\/p>\n

“When Unite raised the workers’ treatment, the Airport’s Australian investor thousands of miles away\u00a0expressed its concerns, but\u00a0closer to home Greater Manchester’s councils have done nothing.<\/p>\n

“Many of the workers have been out of work for six weeks and while some workers have returned to the site, JCK is actively preventing the union from\u00a0carrying out safety inspections.<\/p>\n

“The treatment of these skilled workers is unacceptable, and we urge Manchester Airport Group and its stakeholders to meet with us to ensure this situation is resolved urgently.”<\/p>\n
