{"id":76266,"date":"2020-05-15T12:48:53","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T11:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=76266"},"modified":"2020-05-15T12:48:53","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T11:48:53","slug":"project-managers-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/project-managers-mental-health\/76266\/","title":{"rendered":"Project managers require improved mental health support, says APM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>63% of project managers say their main project is causing them stress, with the majority expecting more disruption to projects due to Covid-19, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APM<\/a> calls for improved mental health support<\/h2>\n<p>As more people start to return to the workplace this week, a new survey by Association for Project Management (APM), carried out by research company <a href=\"https:\/\/censuswide.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Censuswide<\/a>, reveals the majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/project-professionals-construction\/75853\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">project managers<\/a> say their main project is causing them stress.<\/p>\n<h3>Survey results reveal:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>40% of respondents cited poor work-life balance<\/li>\n<li>32% cited unrealistic expectations<\/li>\n<li>36.5% said they had too much to do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The survey also revealed that 27.6% don\u2019t think their workplace is doing enough to support the mental health and wellbeing of those responsible for managing and delivering projects.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (18-24 May), Dr Clara Cheung, lecturer in project management at the University of Manchester, and author of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apm.org.uk\/about-us\/research\/research-fund\/2019-research-fund-studies-wellbeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wellbeing of Project Professionals<\/a><em>\u2019\u00a0<\/em>report, calls on employers to help improve support for project professionals in the workplace:<\/p>\n<h3>Review mental health support for project managers<\/h3>\n<p>Dr Cheung said: \u201cAPM\u2019s latest survey reveals that project professionals experience high levels of stress in the workplace due to the often frenetic, fast paced and dynamic nature of project-based work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent impact of the pandemic including the lockdown period might also have increased the risk of project managers to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-workers-suicide\/76042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health problems<\/a>, such as anxiety, burnout, depression, social isolation and fear of unemployment.\u00a0Under these circumstances, it\u2019s vital that employers review the mental health support mechanisms provided for staff and how these can be improved upon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could include reminding staff of support already in place or looking at the introduction of\u00a0resilience-training\u00a0that focuses on post-traumatic growth, wellness action plans, mental health first aiders and access to support from a confidential counselling helpline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>APM said it is committed to supporting and helping the project community.<\/p>\n<h3>It has provided a series of tips for individuals feeling a strain on their mental health:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep up professional development \u2013\u00a0everyone\u00a0can benefit from refreshing their skills and boosting their knowledge. APM has recently launched a series of online resources to help support those working in project roles.
