{"id":76364,"date":"2020-05-19T10:02:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T09:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=76364"},"modified":"2020-05-19T10:02:35","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T09:02:35","slug":"3m-boost-for-devon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/3m-boost-for-devon\/76364\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a33m boost for Devon as BAM and Network Rail promise to hire locally"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Devon has received a \u00a33m economy boost with more to come as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail<\/a> commits to using local businesses where possible, as a result of the government-funded project to build a new sea wall<\/h2>\n<p>The new sea wall will help protect the railway and town from rising sea levels and extreme weather for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/covid-19-economy-recovery\/76193\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boost to the local economy<\/a> around Dawlish and Teignbridge comes as a result of Network Rail and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamnuttall.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAM Nuttall<\/a> committing to spend as much money locally as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the amount spent in the Dawlish and surrounding areas to support the construction of the first section of the new sea wall, the team building the sea wall estimate that they will spend a further \u00a35m locally as part of the plans to complete the second section of the new sea wall.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail\u2019s plans for the second phase of the project to complete the new sea wall, which will be 410m in length from Colonnade underpass towards Dawlish Warren, are expected to be submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teignbridge.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teignbridge District Council<\/a> in the next month.<\/p>\n<p>The government has committed \u00a380m of funding to complete the upgrade of the Dawlish sea wall.<\/p>\n<h3>Supporting the local economy<\/h3>\n<p>Stuart Calvert, Network Rail\u2019s capital delivery director for Wales &amp; Western, said: \u201cI am delighted that we\u2019ve spent nearly \u00a35m with local suppliers and businesses in the Dawlish and Teignbridge area as a result of the first section of the new sea wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to continuing to support the local economy, particularly in these difficult times. The proposed second section, which would continue the new sea wall north-eastwards adjacent to the station, is likely to bring in another \u00a35m to be spent locally with contractors, suppliers and accommodation providers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how vital this will be for many businesses struggling to cope with the impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus outbreak<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phil Bowcock, operations manager at BAM Nuttall, added: \u201cBAM Nuttall have a history of working at Dawlish since 2014. We are proud to continue this association with the area and help secure this vital piece of the UK railway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have and will continue, through close collaboration, engage with local people, suppliers and stakeholders to support the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project is of great benefit to local people and the South West Region.
