{"id":76714,"date":"2020-05-27T09:48:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T08:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=76714"},"modified":"2020-05-27T09:48:35","modified_gmt":"2020-05-27T08:48:35","slug":"sizewell-c-nuclear-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/sizewell-c-nuclear-power\/76714\/","title":{"rendered":"Sizewell C nuclear power station plans submitted"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The planning application to build Sizewell C, the new nuclear power station in Suffolk, has been submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/planning-inspectorate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Planning Inspectorate<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Sizewell C will be a near replica of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hinkley-point-c-concrete\/59173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hinkley Point C<\/a> in Somerset which is delivering huge\u00a0economic benefits to the South West and boosting the UK\u2019s industrial capacity. Using the\u00a0same design means Sizewell C will benefit from significantly reduced construction costs and\u00a0lower risk. Innovative financing has the potential to reduce costs even further.<\/p>\n<p>The application for a Development Consent Order follows four rounds of public consultation\u00a0which began in 2012. More than 10,000 residents and organisations in Suffolk have\u00a0contributed their views and helped to shape the final proposals.<\/p>\n<h3>Depending on approval<\/h3>\n<p>If approved, Sizewell C will supply around 6 million homes with always-on, low carbon electricity made in the UK. It will support the expansion of renewables and improve the UK\u2019s national resilience by reducing the need for energy imports.<\/p>\n<p>The DCO application was deferred for 2 months in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances created by the coronavirus. Extra measures will be put in place to make it easier for local communities to scrutinise the proposals once they are published. These include extending the pre-examination period to allow more time for interested parties to register with the Planning Inspectorate.<\/p>\n<h3>Economic benefits<\/h3>\n<p>The new power station will provide a huge stimulus to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-output-april\/75906\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK economy<\/a> following the coronavirus pandemic. Around 25,000 employment opportunities and 1,000 apprenticeships will be created during construction.<\/p>\n<p>In the East of England, Sizewell C will boost training and employment opportunities for young people and create long-term, well-paid jobs. Once operational, it will employ 900 people in high-skilled positions based in Suffolk.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 70% of the construction value will be spent with firms across the UK, including in the\u00a0East of England, Wales, and in the North.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-76714-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/edf.thirdlight.com\/file\/1425560347\/61326824947\/width=-1\/height=-1\/format=-1\/fit=scale\/rev=1\/t=441815\/e=never\/k=095a598d\/EDF%20-%20Sizewell%20C%20-%20for%20BBC%20-%20No%20TXT.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/edf.thirdlight.com\/file\/1425560347\/61326824947\/width=-1\/height=-1\/format=-1\/fit=scale\/rev=1\/t=441815\/e=never\/k=095a598d\/EDF%20-%20Sizewell%20C%20-%20for%20BBC%20-%20No%20TXT.mp4\">https:\/\/edf.thirdlight.com\/file\/1425560347\/61326824947\/width=-1\/height=-1\/format=-1\/fit=scale\/rev=1\/t=441815\/e=never\/k=095a598d\/EDF%20-%20Sizewell%20C%20-%20for%20BBC%20-%20No%20TXT.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h3>Key role in lowering emissions<\/h3>\n<p>Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson CBE, managing director at Sizewell C, said: \u201cSizewell C is a net-zero infrastructure project ready to kick-start the economy following the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will offer thousands of high-quality job opportunities and long-term employment for people living in Suffolk and it will strengthen the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/design-nuclear-power-plants\/73058\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nuclear supply chain<\/a> across\u00a0the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On top of the economic benefits, Sizewell C will avoid 9 million tonnes of CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere each year.
