{"id":76951,"date":"2020-06-02T08:09:59","date_gmt":"2020-06-02T07:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=76951"},"modified":"2020-06-02T08:09:59","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T07:09:59","slug":"construction-roadmap-to-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-roadmap-to-recovery\/76951\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Roadmap to Recovery\u2019 to revive UK construction after Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The \u2018Roadmap to Recovery\u2019 has been published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Leadership Council\u2019s<\/a> Covid-19 Task Force to drive the recovery of construction after the Covid-19 crisis<\/h2>\n<p>The Roadmap to Recovery aims to drive the recovery of construction and built environment, and through them the wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/understanding-of-value\/76727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The construction industry is uniquely placed to drive the national economic recovery. It employs 3.1 million workers and exports billions of pounds of products and services.<\/p>\n<p>The Roadmap to Recovery plans to increase the level of activity across the construction ecosystem, accelerate the process of industry adjustment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/gen-covid-19-construction\/76801\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new normal<\/a>, and build capacity in the industry to deliver strategic priorities.<\/p>\n<h3>These strategic priorities include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing prosperity across the UK<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/building-decarbonisation\/74802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Decarbonisation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Modernisation through digital and manufacturing technologies<\/li>\n<li>Delivering better, safer buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>There are 3 phases to the Roadmap to Recovery, to be delivered over two years:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Restart: increase output, maximise employment and minimise disruption (0-3 months)<\/li>\n<li>Reset: drive demand, increase productivity, strengthen capability in the supply chain (3-12 months)<\/li>\n<li>Reinvent: transform the industry, deliver better value, collaboration and partnership (12-24 months).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The plan states: \u201cThe outcomes will be a more capable, professional, productive and profitable sector, which delivers better value to clients, better performing infrastructure and buildings, and competes successfully in global markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure to act will miss an opportunity to deliver this, and risks the industry lapsing into a longer term recession, which erodes capability and skills, and leaves a smaller, weaker sector as a legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The task force is now engaging with Government to test how the plans proposals might be delivered.<\/p>\n<h3>Industry reaction<\/h3>\n<p>Responding to the announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBI<\/a> chief UK policy director Matthew Fell, said: \u201cThe CBI welcomes the Roadmap to Recovery strategy for the UK construction industry published by the Construction Leadership Council today [1 June].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA major programme of investment in infrastructure and housing is needed to help the UK economy build back better from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a> and accelerate action on our long-term challenges of climate change and regional growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to deliver this, it will be essential that the construction industry is in good financial health, ready to mobilise as one. Investing in long-term project pipelines, improving procurement in the public and private sectors, and committing to collaborate rather than litigate, can all help the sector step up at this time of need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis strategy sets out clear workstreams that government and industry should commit to, ensuring the stability and confidence of the industry, and putting construction on a path to drive the recovery of the UK economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key element of the plan is the emphasis on skills and people. CITB will continue to work as part of the CLC and with construction employers.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Beale, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citb.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CITB<\/a> chief executive, added: \u201cThe Roadmap To Recovery has been developed by numerous industry representatives and is a comprehensive, collaborative responsive to the current crisis;
