{"id":77583,"date":"2020-06-12T13:19:18","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T12:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=77583"},"modified":"2021-01-25T11:34:01","modified_gmt":"2021-01-25T11:34:01","slug":"hiring-site-accommodation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/hiring-site-accommodation\/77583\/","title":{"rendered":"Things to consider before hiring site accommodation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Independent hirer of modular and portable accommodation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wernick.co.uk\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wernick<\/a>, takes a look at everything you need to know about hiring site accommodation<\/h2>\n<p>If you employ staff, you are obliged to provide\u00a0\u2018adequate and appropriate\u2019 welfare facilities\u00a0for them for the duration of their working day.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-sites-2\/77485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction sites<\/a>, this provision is commonly referred to as \u2018site accommodation\u2019 or simply \u2018welfare\u2019. The type of welfare required for a site depends on several factors, some of which I will try to detail here.<\/p>\n<p>According to the HSE information sheet (59)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/pubns\/cis59.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0\u2018Provision of welfare facilities during construction work\u2019<\/a>: \u2018Construction workers need adequate toilet and washing facilities, a place to warm up and eat their food and somewhere to store clothing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The document recommends providing the following as \u2018good facilities can positively benefit health and well-being and can help to prevent dermatitis:\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Well maintained toilets with an effective means of flushing with water*<\/li>\n<li>Washing facilities<\/li>\n<li>Drinking water<\/li>\n<li>Rest facilities<\/li>\n<li>Changing rooms and lockers (if workers are required to change clothing)*<\/li>\n<li>Heating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Appropriate facilities for female workers should also be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The document goes into more detail on each of the points above, which I won\u2019t bore you with here.<\/p>\n<p>Suffice to say that site accommodation should enable workers to take an adequate break during the day away from the elements and maintain some level of hygiene!<\/p>\n<h3>Making an assessment<\/h3>\n<p>The first step into hiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/fusion-pulse-wernick\/76696\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welfare accommodation<\/a> for your site should be to make an assessment of the site itself and the workers who will be frequenting the site.<\/p>\n<h4>Begin with:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>How many workers\/subcontractors will be using the site on an average day?<\/li>\n<li>Can a lorry access the site\/pick up the accommodation once the project is complete?<\/li>\n<li>How much space do you have for the accommodation itself?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have access to utilities \u2013 electricity\/mains water\/drainage?<\/li>\n<li>How long is the project for?<\/li>\n<li>Do office staff\/managers need desk space\/access to a meeting space?<\/li>\n<li>Do you require furniture?<\/li>\n<li>Are extra secure or anti-vandal units necessary?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to register the site with the Considerate Constructors scheme or do you need to maintain Considerate Constructors compliance for your company?<\/li>\n<li>Is my company\/site committed to reducing its carbon footprint?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Getting a quote<\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve completed your assessment, it\u2019s time to look for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wernick.co.uk\/hire\/products\/welfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welfare provider<\/a>. Unless your company has an existing contract with a hirer, you\u2019re likely to head to Google for answers.<\/p>\n<p>Herein lies a problem we\u2019ve noticed \u2013 welfare is known by a myriad of different names. We put effort into making sure that we can be found no matter what keywords customers use \u2013 \u2018site cabins\u2019, \u2018site offices\u2019, \u2018TAUs\u2019 and \u2018portable buildings\u2019 are popular alternatives, although we have been asked for brand names that are now defunct or belong to other hirers!<\/p>\n<p>Our staff are fully trained to assist with any enquiry, big or small, and our customer checklist enables us to obtain all the information we need to provide a quote with the least hassle.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to Bridget Bonsall, depot manager at our Cornwall depot to find out what questions are asked most frequently regarding welfare hire.<\/p>\n<h4>The top ten are:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Can you access our site with your lorry?<\/li>\n<li>What do I place the units on?
